Show Page 10 The Utah Statesman r— Monday January 25 1982 35rr rrcn Classic jazz comes to life in 'Echoes of anErJ by Ben Lass Lenny White noted jazz artist came up with an idea one day for an album that seems to have everything needed to become a musical masterpiece What he did was gather several popular jazz and soul stars together to do an LP of songs from one of the most s creative jazz eras the to early 1960s The result? Classic jazz is definitely not dead in America Echoes of an Era is the LP produced from that idea and White couldn't have picked better talent to make it The members include Chaka Khan vocals Freddie Hubbard trumpet and fluegelhorn Joe Hender mid-1940- son saxophone Chick Corea piano Stanley Clarke acoustic bass and White himself on drums The entire LP is made up of old songs from this era The group didn’t do any rehearsals and didn’t strive for absolute perfection because they wanted a pure clean snappy sound It is really surprising to see these musicians some of whom have been innovators of the now popular jazz-roc- k fusion show that they still like the older jazz and can perform it superbly For instance take the first tune on side one “Them There Eyes” Who would have thought that Chaka Khan who brought the world such soul hits as “Tell Me Something Good” and “Sweet Thing” could sing like Ella Fitzgerald’ TK-asked of Stanley Clarke Where play the acoustic bass so fluidly? be t HVM Similarly anyone who knows Chick Corea’s style would his crisp classic style on “All of Me" Freddie Hubbard adds an extra dimension tn group with his style "High Wire (the Aerkt)” Music At times you wonder whether or not actually hstening to Louis Armstrong For those of you old classic fans don I get into today s sound jazz won’t that really u up Echoes of an Era If ha simpTiS tk ’Z Dancers present uneven concert (continued from page 9) between modem and jaa were unclear one did not see the constant tension and explosive energy iated with jazz dame normal-assi- After “Arcs” a rather uneventful display of ana upper torso movements a variety of modem dance elements (ie symmetry balance contractions etc) helped to set “Dark Star" apart from all the other dances This dance was dead) the finest of the evening The performance condudrd with “Variants" a dance ami whit h showed contrasting movements to the repetitions of numbers overlaid with conversation All in all the tempo of da performance was good until after the intermission Never thelcss the concert was well worth the price of admission SUBMIT TO THE CRUCIBLE!
