Show ?OD ( C ( o Lauren Goebel a junior from Chicago put away the Bengals in last night's match 5-- 10 is a picture of concentration for the Aggies as they defeat Idaho State in the Spectrum It took the Aggies to four games Utah State stumbles then humbles Idaho State by Dale Bublitz Last night’s Utah State-Idah- o State match in the Spectrum appeared to be like the classic novel There was the main plot (USU’s victory in four games) and distracting side events like the two Aggie court personalities and a disappointing performance from the Aggie substitute team On paper and in the mind of USU Coach Marilyn McReavy the Aggies should have had little difficulty with the Bengals “You know we should have won this meet in 30 minutes” she would say afterwards Watching the second and fourth games would seem to back the coach’s thoughts The Aggies decimated the Bengals in game two 1 0 in eight minutes recording their first shutout in two seasons The Aggies controlled the nets with six stuff blocks for points In the fourth game they ran off 10 unanswered points and went on to win 15-- 2 to claim the game and match in 10 minutes This was the personality that McReavy enjoys watching but the one that disappeared at times in games one and three The first game opened as the Aggies wouldn’t surrender the serve to their guests but then the poor side of the Aggie game began to show Apparently paced by Alice LaTourrette and Tammy Sorenson 2 the Bengals cut the Aggie lead to and threaten 5-- 14-1- ed to win McReavy didn’t feel the Bengals were totally responsible for the comeback “We took them too says McReavy “We played poorly and the statistics prove wc made errors Contrast game two when we won 15-- 0 and had four errors but in game one we had 24 of them” The Aggie coach felt that her club still suffered through a problem of immaturity rather than lacking in talent “There have been evenings and this was one of them where they flat quit playing” According to the coach this lack of maturity carried over into game three and a different group of Aggies Leading two games to none McReavy inserted her younger players and lost a 1 decision “I was dissappointed with them” said McReavy “Maybe it carried over from the play of the strating group but they weren’t being aggressive and didn’t think about the things they were doing” When the Bengal lead reached 13-- 7 the first unit begged McReavy to put them back on the floor McReavy gave in and reinserted them but they found the deficit too much to overcome “I don’t normally give in to those types of requests” said McReavy The Bengals as a team lost the match and one of their players Lauri Johnson lost a diamond earring down a drain but the team’s spirits were high was “I just pleased we could at least play four 15-1- games with the Aggies” said ISU coach Jan Yandell “Of course we were intimidated by them but in two games we proved we could play with them I only wish we hadn’t been humiliated in games two and four” The win and the elements included in the win team meeting to apparently required a iron out Aggie problems McReavy indicated that this was a young team that needed to be reminded its court maturity level cold sn “They have played at levels of hot and to thepou intimidated times are at McReavy “and where they don’t play well” their The Aggies appeared to be initimidated on were recent road swing to Hawaii where they manhandled in two matches On the way back much of that was corrected at the UCLA Invita tional Over the weekend the Aggies upset Paciic n and Pepperdine to regain their te M Texas-Arlingto- t national ranking This bit of momentum should help number-eigh- them tomo Hawaii in night when they face No 1 ranked Spectrum “Our team will either be intimidated or play good match” said McReavy “We know more p play with them and might give them than most teams They seem to have probi their passing game due to our style of serves is an excellent defensive team” |
