Show day February ft 1981Plp) ‘W’ grading policy needs examination The ASL’SL' Executive Senate has recommended that the police for “V" grades on student transcripts be rev lewed It is university policy for professors to notify students of their academic standing in a class by the third week of the ejuarter and The Utah Statesman supports this policy he idea is that if a student does not know how well he is doing in a class he cannot make a reasonable judgment as to whether or not he should drop that class In cases where a teacher through ignorance of this polns or thtough sheer negligence does not give ample mduation of a student’s standing it is wholly unfair to hold the student resjmnsible bv giving him a "W” grade for withdrawing past the deadline That is why this resolution is so imxirtant and in our opinion necessary 1 he I tah Stateman is not calling for a coddling of srudents But the ability to withdraw from a class should never ! limited bv time alone Course work missed in the mid Himt of a quarter is just as c rue ial as that during the beginning of the class I All we are asking for is a little more flexibility in the fifth week of the ejuarter when special circumstances arise that prevent the student from attending class Cases would have to lie reviewed individually of course But if a student is in trouble by the third week of the course he should be aware of it Ine I tah Statesman would like to see the policy of students receiving 30 percent of their grade by the third week of the quarter adhered to It is easy to overlook or ignore a policy like this Some professors do it ail the time H hiJe The Utah Statesman is in support of the AM MJ resolution we believe thatcomplete it only attacks a symptom of a much larger problem If professors are allowed to violate university policy with impunity something is wrong with the system If students are forced to wthdraw from a class after the deadline because their professors refused to adhere to a university Hk should the students suffer? Lrmersity policy should never be violated with such reckless disregard for the rights of students in the first plate hut when it is the students should in no way be made to suffer Parking improvements To the editor: would like to make five suggestions any one of whkh would solve lSU’s critical I motorcycles to park them in our classrooms litis would also enable us to ride from class lo class 3) The best solution would Ire Co hold class at the Logan Drive-i- n This would eliminate walking all together 4) A solution advocated by parking shortage 1) Build parking ferrates on the top of each building and pave the Quad This would enable all of us lo park near our the lunatic fringe on campus is classes o park our cars at the Spec2) Allow those of us with trum parking lot or the NFS given parking lot This obvious makes no sense for the quart mile (5 minute) walk tocaripi would Ire a terrible strain toot atrophied legs 5) 1 hose wiih parking pn blems could consider droppin out of this school and attendu the one in Benson I'm to! they have plenty of parking Robert Sow Utah State needs Dr Pepper To the editor: 532-64- editor AnrlWh'r’t0p-'Knuc “'Xmnrni 0 EXT- Pn - editor - Rdr?nU“V'"y KenW Molly Hatch M Johnson Lry ' wm edited by student of Utah and State Uni versify Editorial opinion are lrlv hoof he editorial board and "h nrcf article I hey do no nrrcMany reflect the opinions of Utah State Enversty or ASLSU PoUCV Thc rdifor reserves the right to etftt refu ne pnn any Jette Letter ha e or iVprwn and lmH ’ord or less Miff receive firs f deration Utter mu 1(nrd - letter m S ihrne-werkl- Baker produci!"
