atmosphere for us “It’s not all going to be as secure it is here in this fine university” iron warned ‘‘I’m afraid some of u will leave here thinking you’ve imed it all” He felt that books weren’t the lone th to all the answers “We have the st brilliant scholars of the country Washington” he said “but they ) e-- can’t solve all the problems” The problems we face might take only a dose of common sense he said Aaron thinks we only need to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask how we might contribute to our surroundings and determine what our goals are in solving world problems “The way to solve our problems might be by seeing how we live” he said “In South Boston and other places we created the problems In other areas it’s the same way and we can find the solutions” His remarks quickly switched from exterior conflicts to interior ones “No matter how bad things are” he said “you must be the captain of your own ship and the master of your own destiny” He said we need to be good at what we do Be the best there is and one could challenge the great people of our time he said When he was young in Mobile Alabama Aaron said he looked up to Joe Louis and Willie Mays Neither had more than a high school education but decided early in their lives what they wanted Mays became the third leading home-ru- n hitter and Louis became the heavyweight champion of the world Aaron talked about two other successful men who overcame obstacles John Kennedy was the son of wealthy man and Martin Luther King the son of a Georgia minister “Both could have packed their bags and gone home” he said “and both prove that we can make our own lives great We need to leave behind our footprints in the sands of time” Sacrifice to achieve goals is necessary at times said 'Aaron who added that on occasions individuals have been asked to give their life for what they believed or wanted “I beg you that your choice isn’t to do anything” he said “Please dare to be different but the choice is yours” He recalled Shakespeare who wrote that there are people who are born to greatness have it thrust upon them or achieve it on their own The majority of us are asked to achieve it he said “And don’t think that the great hadn’t tasted defeat in the process” he said “Louis was asked to regain the world heavyweight tide and Muhammed Ali regained it three ' times” He concluded by challenging the crowd to avoid being only a bystander and to leave the university to make the world a better place After 23 years as a player with the Milwaukee Braves Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers AarOn ac-cepted a front office job with the Braves He currently serves as vice president in charge of player develop- ment In assessing the huge player salaries he said “Don‘t blame the players If someone offered you $100 and later $500 to do the same job you would be stupid to turn down the higher offer That is the situation baseball players are in” i I great Hank Aaron visited USU to take part in
