Show Workshops were pretty one-side- d Another Mothers Weekend has come and pine giving I'SU coeds and their mothers the chance to gel together and visit The w hole concept of the weekend is very praiseworthy: In coni unction with Mothers Day the two days of events give I'SU women the opportunity to invite their mothers up to see them and the campus Theoretically most of the planned activities try to Ik general enough to appeal to ev eryone This vear however the workshops were for the most part geared toward Suy Homemaker W hy else would we find classes on pastries makeup and hair lean t find a husband without a perfect coif) quilting a fashion show and the all important table setting contest? For this we came to college? In other words we workshops catering to the typical stereotyped view of women— Marian Cunningham in her Happy Days kitchen whipping up a batch of brownies smiling broadly and wearing that pt apron of the Kighties? Are you sure? These types of workshops may lie a lot of fun for some women but there are many who simply don't fit the stereoty pe and were disappointed at the scheduled events opting to skip them altogether Then again there may have been women w ho do a lot of cooking and sewing and would have preferred Ining exposed to something different for a change The workshops need to have a much broader appeal Most college women have by the very act of attending college demonstrated that they have other things on their minds besides cooking cleaning 71711 Just because a woman is a mother doesn't automatically mean she goes into spasms of delight at the thought of knitting an afghan or making cream puffs Maybe she's more interested in Margaret Thatcher than Hetty Crocker On the positive side the weekend did offer us Dr Rhea Seddon NASA astronaut candidate Dr Reba Keele HYU professor Reader’s Theater president's reception smorgasbord dinner and the Robins Awards Most importantly it gave mothers and daughters time together Hut next time let's give the Suzy Homemaker image of women a long deserved rest and try for workshops that appeal to a broad (no pun intended) cross section of women After all they are women first mothers second THE UTAH 7- - ji STATESMAN USPS 532 Davd Esserisn editor Aayne Adair managing editor Doug Christensen assignment editor Greg Hughes university editor Barbara Mhite copy editor Hermit Oson mre editor H nute Ri’e entertainment editor UTAH STATESMAN is eintten and edited &y students at Utah State Unver THE SaTy j EDITORIAL OPINIONS are solely those ot the editor ai board and those enters with signed articles and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Utah State Umversity or ASUSU LETTER POLO The edrtor reserves the right to print edit or refuse any let ter Letters typewriter and limited to 800 words or less will receive IWst con SHMrabon letters must be signed with a name student number and phone mender 60 Daie Bubiiu sports editor Ron Hendncs photo editor Holly Hatch advertising manager Vicki Vatedaus production manager Kns Porter asst production manager Larry Bauer faculty adviser UTAH STATESMAN is published tn weemy (fixing the school ye except during finals weens and vehooi twmays including quarter breaks Veteran s Day THE Thanksgiving Cay holiday and PresaJents' Day holiday are school holidays holiday Fee increases need scrutiny rardless To the editor A ver or ho a it huh un line with current thought dcjiii to upgrade Womens Int‘rmlUmte Athletics at I Si The question las alwavsi wan “ho shall we finance ' it” The answer fas alwavM was ’Taise student fees With the addition of $2 SO per quarter each stu- dent's yearly contribution to athletics at this school is between $70 and $MO Now a new parkin proposal is bein studied Funds are needed to pay off the new parkin terrace and lo finance the shuttle bus It has been proposed fand is supported most viorously by the student members on the committee!
