Show Page 4 The Utah Statesman Monday February 111 980 I OPINION Personnel cuts must be educated President Cazier's announcement that several positions trimmed from the university payroll is an ominous one There is little doubt that the academic integrity of Utah State will be compromised by the loss of members of the teaching and research staff As decisions are made about what jobs will be eliminated it is vital that administrators remember the prime function of USU— to educate students Personnel cuts should be made that reflect that tenet of the campus bureaucracy Objective should be conducted to determine if any fat exists in the administrative body In these days of economic famine fat cannot be tolerated at this university at any level Let it be trimmed— ruthlessly Logic as well as fairness dictates that such action is unavoidable The elimination of the assistant vice presidency for business represents an exciting and praiseworthy precedent Evan Stevenson's promotion to vice president for business means he will have to handle the job previously done by two men Of course Stevenson's burden is not a light one There is little doubt however that the economic squeeze USU presently is in demands that ponderous burdens be shouldered by the administration It won't be easy but it is necessary Thousands of dollars will be saved every year with the elimination of Stevenson’s old position thousands that represent a significant dollop scooped out of the almost $13 5 million total which must be trimmed from USU’ s budget The bottom line of personnel cuts is simple— surplus administrative personnel should go first research personnel next teaching personnel last Quality professors and instructors should be exempt from the unavoidable paring of university employees Their funct'on is too vital to the most central purpose of the university If any teaching jobs must be eliminated efficiency should be the touchstone for determining who should go But only after every surplus administrator secretary research assistant and clerk has been terminated Harsh decisions must be made It is hoped they are made intelligently will be THE UTAH TATESMAN uses Jvn Sucking actor Conrad Waiws associate editor Ron Henfricks design eOtor Wayne Adair uftversrty editor 0 1 UaDery antertawvnent eOTor Tom Komegay CO sports editor Oare BuOktr co sports edrtor Dave Comwsa we ecktor Greg Hughes on campus edrtor THE UTAH statesman eared by students at s written ad Mali State Unrver sify EOrroWAl OPINIONS solely those of trw editorial board and tnese writers wrtti signed articles and do not necessarily reflecl me opinions at Man State University or ASUSU LETTER POLICY: The editor reserves me right to edit refuse or print any letter Letters typewritten on a 85 character Ine and Minted to BOO words or less wet receive Brst consideration Letters must be signed with a name student number and phone number Stan Sisk photo editor Tracy Feltoi copy editor Vicki Vatertaus production u? mo manager Audrey Anderson Kns Porter assistant production managers Oownng advemsmg manager laix Larry Baker 'acuity adviser “Hey man! Whats a few cash registers and coke machines amongjriends Class conflicts inconvenience To the editor The purpose of the university is to educate people and to aid them in attaining a career Yet in this university there seems to be a problem in accomplishing this purpose especially in the chemistry department This department offers a three quarter series in organic chemistry aimed at preveterinary premedical and other life science students as well as chemistry majors Three years ago the final quarter of this series was changed from its regular early morning hour to 11:30 a m This conflicts directly with the final quarter of the biology 120 series It was reported to a faculty member of the ADVS department by the chemistry department that the reason for the change was ‘professor convenience' This year there are about 15 students of the organics class inconvenienced Who knows how many students there have been in the previous three years and how many there will be in the years to come because of this conflict? Letters requesting a change were sent ot the chemistry department by ADVS faculty The replies were always the same— “it's too late to change now but we'U fix it next and yet the two classes still year" -onflict When more pressure was applied the chemistry department gave the argument that the biology 120 one-fourt- h UTAH STATESMAN is published biweekly during me school year except diking finals weeks and school MMays including quarter breaks Veteran's Day holiday Thanksgiving Day holiday Presidents’ Day holiday and Matron Day holiday are school holidays THE EOfTOMAl OFFICES ve m rtm 31 S Taggart Student Center Business 4 fices m room 317 Phone 7504759 SECOND CLASS mailing pant at Utah 84321 Logi ' hun?" series is for freshmen the organic 330 series for juniors and 'never the twain shall meet' For at least us prevet students our freshman year is filled with inorganic chemistry math and English Our junior year is full of physics and upper division biology courses Many have to take both organics and biology at the same time Come spring we are faced with the choice of taking one and putting the other off for a year which totally defeats the foundations set up in series classes The time change is ridiculous If two quarters of a series are at a particular time why change the last quarter? If it has to be changed why not an 'oddball' hour rather than a popular time slot like 11:30?
