Show Page 4 The Utah Statesman Monday January 28 1 980 OPINION Students should pay for quality education The complaints students frequently voice about increasing tuition may be more from reflex than rational thought There is a need for an increase in tutition With last year s inflation rate ending at 133 percent it is obvious Americans are having to pay more to live thus should be expected to pay more for an education One Utah state legislator said tuition increase should not be over 10 percent Student lobbyists from USU recommended a S2 percent increase in tuition With either of those decision students are getting a good deal Students should not expect high quality education if they are not willing to pay for it We are paying less of a percent for our education than in 1975 Currently we are percent of our education costs compared paying 17 to with 21 percent in 1975 How can professors be motivated to stay if they aren't getting pajed enough? According to a Utah college professors group currently there is a 19 percent negative gap between the Utah college professors' salaries and the Consumer Price Index Some college departments at USU can't get any professor with a PhD to teach because they can make more working in the private sector For example why should an accountant with a PhD work at a university for about 523000 when he could be payed around $50000 for w orking for a private business? If we won't accept a fjtmn increase then we are endangering the fine academic mix of individuals at USU Education at USU is already on a diet with a threatening budget reduction Students who are the main of the academic meal must be willing to accept the check for the educational food they consume reci-pien- Both the editorial (Jan iHi the letter of Dr James Shaver (Jan 211 stated that student opinion was disregarded and that the students don t want more seats in the stadium On the contrary the student opinion poll individual student opinion and the opinion and arguments of the four student members of the council were considered very closely and in fact weighed heavily in the chosen —Ben Franklin THE UTAH: STATESMAN USPS D L Mabery entertainment editor Tom Komegay shorts edtor Dave Cornwell wire editor Greg Hugftes on campus editor recurring sections editor uTAH STATESMAN is written and students at Utah State Urvvet J oy uRAl OPINIONS are soiety those of "d tor al board and those writers --- ed and do not iari'y reect the romens of Utah : university or AsL'SU "ER POLICY The eAtor reserves gnt to edi' refuse or any let ah letters must Be typewritten on a maracter Imesoace and be ted to 0 words or less They must be Signed :n a name student number and phone umber Stan Sisk photo editor Tracy Fellm copy editor Vicki Valeria us production Audrey Anderson Kris Porter t0 S3? manager assistant production managers Laune Downing advertising manager Larry Baker faculty adviser THE UTAH STATESMAN is published triweekly dunng the school year except dunng finals weeks and school holidays including quarter breaks Veteran s Day holiday Thanksgiving Day holiday Presidents' Day holiday and Memorial Day holiday are school holidays EDITORIAL OFFICES ar Taggart Student Center bees in room 317 SECOND in room 315 Business of CLASS mailing paid at Logan Utah 84321 To the editor It appears misinformation has been presented regarding the reL cent SU Athletic Council's recommendation that an outside donor or donors be found to fund the addition of 10000 seats to Utah State's stadium If a man empties his purse into his head no one can take it from him mm Sue turng editor Con-a- d Walters associate editor Roc Hendncks design editor Wayre Adair university editor ts Chairwoman clarifies opinion recommendation It is apparent that neither Dr Shaver nor the Statesman editor attended either the open meeting of Jan 17 or any of the Athletic Council meetings All are open and many were attended meetings bv and participated in by individuals interested in the council’s delibera tion At the open meeting and the Athletic Council meetings it was stated by the student representatives in their printed report that "On behalf of the students of USU we support the addition of 10000 seats so tong as no student fees are used to finance their construction In the event a need arises for use of student fees we favor the addition of four sports for the following reasons" Repeatedly the student representatives conscientiously represented their constituents both in stating that a student fee increase would be supported only for the four sports and that if an alternative were possible to proceed toward status without a fee increase then that would be preferable It is mv opinion that the council heeded this advice The result from the Faculty meeung retened ? to b1 Shaver was ll ittnxisl meeting since I was iwuttkil athletic is'ce was to bed that a completed discuss not afored the motion but th lion was tabled presumably rfj after the information it tin meeting could be madoivihi The decision to make the mendauon to the president wfj a vote of the entire round one individual The roundup ted to meet the concern students Furthermore On the weekend of Jan 19 we held our sixth annual Special Olympics Winter CarnivaL This year'it was chaired by Michelle Capron and Kim Moody Ralphs I would like to thank them for the great job they did Thanks is also needed for all the separate chairmen They gave a lot and energy to help plan and initiate the carnival The Fraternities and Sororities t0 SP’" y°ur blood?
