Show UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY VOL 77 NO 11 LOGAN UTAH WEONESOAY OCTOBER 17 1979 Work study program needs more students The I : ‘Vv work study program available through the Financial Aids office at Utah State has more positions available than students according to Joy Jacobsen of the Work Study office The Basic Educational Opportunity Grant Program is a federal student-aiprogram which may consist of a loan grant or work study depending on the applicant's income The aid ranges from (200 to 1 1800 per school year Students apply at the Financial Aids office in Old Main where they obtain confidential applications These forms are sent to the College Scholarship Service to determine eligibility Eligibility criteria for the program include establishing financial e need enrollment in college US citizenship and no more than four years previous assistance from the BEOG Notification of eligibility is sent to applicants within six weeks after mailing the form Criteria used in determining eligibility used on the form include the student's annual income for 1978 1979 and his projected income for 1980 d - f 'f is full-tim- £? id0j‘vaiss Other gm qualifications include disclosure of the student's parents' annual income (if the student lives with or receives support from them) the student's assets debts and benefits he or she receives such as veterans or social security Students who have been accepted into the program then contact Joy Jacobsen in the work study office for job placement Work study students are paid minimum wage by theofficeand are given a choice of jobs “If they have no choice they are counseled in the office about their interests and skills and are placed in a job they can handle" said Jacobsen Students must apply and reapply each year to keep the same jobs because of possible financial ataus changes Jacobsen said Often a student will stay with a certain professor throughout his or her stay at the university This can be beneficial to students in their future professions as well as for the professors and the various departments Because work study students are not paid by the departments themselves it does not affect departmental budgets Many teachers therefore take advantage of the program by hiring work study students Jacobsen said The Financial Aids office is 80 percent federally funded and 20 percent state funded she said The amount of money allotted to the office is based on the previous year and any unused portion is returned Only once two years ago did the program run out of funds she said Payroll was temporarily cut off for one week until more funds were received It was the only time in the 17 years she has worked at USU that this has happened Jacobsen said She added that this was unlikely to happen because “are always have more jobs than we have students" She also said that every major college and university in the state has the work study program with the exception of Brigham Young University Because BYU is a private school it has its own programs and private funding At USU allotments for each student are determined by financial aid officers by what is justifiable in each student's case and broken down into quarterly amounts If students overextend their allotted amount for a quarter they must stop working Undergraduates receive the $290 minimum wage limit while graduate students receive $3 This limit will increase only if minimum wage is raised Music unions plays flat during a practice (or a United Service Organisation tour “ travel acroaa the country and through Europe for two mouths perforating songs ?
