one of last year s applicants said she had a grade Judv Cnx-ketpoint average of 3 65 and was still rejin ted by the organization I Hale also said guess m conservative I don’t really see wh there is a need for it When the question comes up then we will handle it However according to one of this year’s Blue Key merrders the question has come up The memlier who asked not to be named said the organization held an informal vote last year and decided to continue excluding women The source said he believes Blue Key had no intention of allowing women to join last year The battle is not entirely uphill Blue Key memler Kandy Fife said he wants the organization pen to women t 1 He added that his opinion represents the minority but Fife predicted qualified women will be accepted this year Related to the question of women in Blue Key is the history of Mortar Board another academically competitive service organization Until two years ago Mortar Board was the exclusively female honor society on campus At that time Mortar Board was pressured to let men in because of its affiliation with a national group of honor societies Blue Key is not a member of that group (liven the choices of changing their constitution to include men disbanding or merging another Mortar group with Board leaders chose to maintain their own identify and accept men PariM when asked if he expected women to be admitted m the USU Blue Key chapter in the next two or three years said the chances are “pretty good" Members of Blue Key had mixed feelings though on how actively they should pursue the recruitment of qualified women A t one of their meetings this year they decided to maintain the current policy of accepting aplications It is impossible to say at this will point if and when Blue Key welcome women into their Members of Mortar organization Board empathetic to the proud traditional spirit the two groups share say they think it will be just as hard for Blue Key to break that tradition as it was for them Ironically Blue Key is now in the process of selecting their Blue Key Darling Perhaps in the near future they will be searching for her in their own ranks Children s House It’s by Sharon
