Show 8A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, October 17, 1984 Holiday Shopping Easy With Books Is the thought of FARMINGTON Christinas getting you down already? Never fear, the Davis county School Districts Parent Education Resource Center (PERC) has just the books to help you. One of their selections is Teachables from trashables: Homemade Toys That Teach" by C. Emma Linderman. The book is a community wide collection of ideas, tips, patterns and money saving toys. Simple, effective step by step drawings make toy making easy for even the four thumbed person. The key to the toy ideas in the book however, must pass the "kid proof tests. The toys must be clean, have no sharp edges, be too big to be swallowed and c made of materials. Toy ideas fall into five basic categories: physical development, sensory and perceptual devel non-toxi- opment, social and emotional, cognitive and symbolic and creative development. Readers can make cardboard box toys, cardboard cone toys, cardboard tube toys, cocoa can toy, egg carton toy, envelope toys or hundreds of other ideas. Some ideas are clothespin matching game, box camera, spool snake, dominoes, matching puzzles, scoop catch, sandwich bag picture book, riding horse, rhythm shakers, finger puppets and a wag- of year. ) help you lose weight, learn come a stress now forming. Even with todays simple cake mixes, there is a personal joy of achievement which comes from looking at the final cake creation. The key to success is to avoid failure. If you know what can cause the failures, you can succeed. The General Foods Kitchens gives these five tips for a more successful cake: ,1. Use the right ingredients. The perfection of a cake depends on certain chemical reactions of the ingredients. Even experienced cooks hesitate tampering with a cake recipe. For example, you cant just substitute whole milk for buttermilk. Good cake makers are always sure they have the right ingredients before they begin, or they find another recipe. 2. Measuring correctly. Cake making is an art, and the recipes are really not simple. The propor- tions of butter to sugar, flour to liquid, and so on are carefully balanced. Use standard measuring utensils and make sure the ingredients are level. 3. Have you got the right pan size? Generally, the cake batter should fill the pan about half full. A cake needs room to rise. When the pan is too large, the cake will be thin and pale on top. Use the size of pan called for in the recipe. 4. The right temperature. Oven racks should be straight and there should be enough room for the air to circulate all around. Never place one pan directly above the other. S. Did you allow enough time? Recipes call for a 30 to 35 minute baking time. Set your timer for the lesser time and then keep the oven door closed until the timer rings. Jarring the cake or letting in cool air at the early stages of baking can cause the cake to fall. Check your cake at the end of the shorter time, then bake the extra 5 minutes or so if necessary. Just a note about cooling. Let the cake stand in the pan for 10 minutes. Loosen the sides with a spatula before turning the cake put on a rack to finish cooling. In Morgan County, cereal leaf beetles damaged a 1,000-acr- e grain field in Morgan County, resulting in a loss of between 30 to 50 percent to the crop, Karren said. Grain growers can determine the presence of the beetle in two stages of its growth and the resulting damage caused in each stage. In its larval stage, the pest damages the leaves of the grain or grass by chewing off all the green e condition. area, leaving a The adult beetles eat all the way through the grain, which then takes on a silvery appearance. This prevents photosynthesis from occurring and the heads of the grain dont mature, Karren net-lik- said. Chemical control is the best method for the time being, but before a grower applies any chemical to an infested field, the grower should determine the extent of the damage and decide whether the cost of the chemical control is worth it. He said entomologists at Utah State University plan to develop a fact sheet this winter that will show growers when it would be economical to apply the Growers who suspect the bee- Entomology Department. Karren said it is uncertain how the beetle got to Utah. It exists in most of the Eastern United States, but somehow, he said, It jumped over 1,000 miles into the middle of the continent. The cereal leaf beetle (Oulema melanopus), a native of Europe, was accidentally introduced in 1962 into Michigan, where its destructive potential was recognized. It was paced under federal quarantine was abandoned in 1976 because all control measures failed to prevent additional spread of the insect. Dr. Karren said that while chemical controls are effective, the beetle may also be controlled biologically with a variety of parasitic wasps. These parasites feed on the eggs or immature (larval) stages of the beetle, a method that provides the most control available. However, this method of control will not immediately be available to Utah grain growers. The parasites will have to be imported from the East Coast, where they will first have to be collected, then reproduced in suf-cost-effecti- 4902 S. $7.06 1900 W. Roy. Must type 60 Classified section, ( A beetle that has the potential to cause serious damage to Utahs grain fields and range grasslands has made its appearance in Utah, the first time the insect has appeared west of the Mississippi. Dr. Jay B. Karren, extension entomologist at Utah State University, said existence of the cereal leaf beetle was confirmed early this summer in Morgan County. Evidence of its presence has since been found in Davis, Weber, Box Elder and Summit counties and Karren said there are indications it has spread to Tooele, Salt Lake and Wasatch counties as well. Now that the beetle has established itself here, its likely to spread further, Karren said, though hes holding back on any predictions of the impact it may have. Anyplace we have irrigated grain, its likely to spread to that area quite rapidly, he said. The chance of it causing damage to grains grown on dry farms appears to be less, but Karren ' said that because the beetles behavior has not been studied on ; such farms, its not known what the effects will be. Karren said the cereal leaf bee- -, tie feeds on all grain crops and many of the grasses in the range areas. awn work, no sales.
