Show JACK FROST THE FRUIT CROP jack frost dealt the fruit industry of emery county a solar plexus blow last saturday night a the temperature dropped down to 21 degrees above zero previous to that time the prospects for a banner crop of all kinds of fruit here exceeded that of any other year all the early fruit bearing trees were heavy laden with blossoms and ever orchard looked 1 ka oe great b s boquet in smudge alres were start ed to combat the frost but the latter proved too strong and d d its badly work sunday night was another cold one and was also destructive to fruit As matters now stand apricots are all killed peaches almost entirely and plums and early apples likewise late apples pears prunes and cherries have been badly knocked but the loss in these var aties of fruits will be by no means total and the degree to wh eh they are hurt varies and in some communities is 1 ahter than that in others if ro more freezing weather occurs there w ill yet be a partial crop of cherries prunes pears and late apples if the fruit crop failure was confined to this county alone there would be s me grounds for discouragement for the present will make the second sive year of the au of a fruit crop by freezing spring weather but all over utah colorado idaho and extending to the atlantic coast extraordinary cold weather has prevailed and fruit crop is knocked either wholly or heavily over half of the country up in utah and salt lake counties the loss is estimated at 75 per cent which is equal to our lobs nine tenths of the fruit trees in emery county are very young yet hence the loss is not felt here as keenly aa in the older fruit sections of the state |
