FARMINGTON For seven of Sean Smiths fourteen years, he has dreamed of winning the United States Judo Association Junior Nationals tournament. On July 7 that dream came to fruition, and Smith says his new goal is to make the Olympic team. Smiths coach. Bill Wick of Layton, said he thinks the soon-to-ninth grader just might be able to do it. The tournament Sean just won is one of the most imporbe . tant by beating one competitor from Washington Sean has excellent snap and focus he can focus all his en-er- heavyweight, if not the most importournaments for a young tant person to win in the country, ; Wick said. ' Sean won his division of the ; tournament, 13 and gy and another from California. to a particular point The tournament was held at Spokane, Washington and more -than 700 fighters from all around the country competed. Wick said part of what makes Smith good is his desire. Sean has a quiet demeanor, but underneath he has a fierce heart for competition. When hes on the mat it shows, Wick said. Wick quickly added, however, that Smith is also successful in judo because he is an excellent technician of intricate moves. He has a lot of quickness for his size. I have told him that if a big man can learn a little mans technique he will be a champion. t0 win ,a sna man nees lek said, At and is and has always 5-- 9 and 170-poun- Smith ; The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the Utah prairie dog has been downlisted from endangered to threatened on the federal governments list of animals in trouble. The move came after a lengthy process of studies and public input to determine the status of die little mammal. The Fish and Wildlife Service, along with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, has been conducting studies and reloca-- r tion projects to disperse prairie dogs and extend their range since they were first listed as en- dangered. The program to date has been a limited success and federal and state wildlife officials say theyre hopeful the animals will continue their comeback. - ,r " I , , State wildlife managers requested the downlisting to threatened status in 1979 citing difficulties in managing the ani-- : . ' 1 mals under federal guidelines for endangered species. Bob Hasenyager, a nongame wildlife biologist for the Divi sion of Wildlife Resources, says his agency welcomes the action. Regulations under the endan- gered guidelines limited the prai-- ; rie dogs to localized areas where populations increased rapidly. ' This made the animals much more susceptible to disease, he 1 -- I .said. t. The nongame biologist ex pressed worries about the Utah prairie dog. We have been very concerned that an uncontrolled disease outbreak would spell almost certain death for entire prairie dog colonies. Now, we can effectively manage these populations and con- tinue Typing our monitoring and relocation projects more easily. Hasenyager added that the relocation projects ensure that diseases, although inevitable among prairie dog colonies, wont dessi-mathe entire population. The change in status means ranchers and farmers can legally remove some prairie dogs from a limited area in Cedar Valley, Iron County, where they are causing significant damage. The federal reclassification report stipulates removal methods and allows animals to be taken only after a permit has been obtained from the Division of Wildlife Resources. Federal and state wildlife officials will monitor the removal program to find out how it affects the overall population. Prairie dog towns, once abundant, became scarce in the late 1800s when the buffalo began to disappear.
