The answer is a all-Am- er bed posed in steps beginning with a bed of mixed greens, followed by layers of fresh vegetables, cold meat and cheese, and crowned with plenty of thick dressing. The salad requires a dressing that can stand up to its hearty character. When it comes to nutrition and flavor, a stratified salad real ly stacks up against a casserole, and takes much less time and energy. A meal composed of a main-dis- h stratified salad and fresh bread sticks or crackers can include representatives from all the basic food groups in a way that is new, exciting, and easy to greens, then be creative and generous with the fixings. Many Drugs Abused, Says Doctor of prescription and drugs is rapidly increasing, and both doctors and patients contribute to the growing problem, according to Dr. Harvey P. Wheelwright. Dr. Wheelwright said that statistics indicate one billion prescriptions were written in this country in 1981. That is enough for 6.2 prescriptions for every man, woman and child in this country, he said. And there is plenty of evidence that .all these (prescriptions) are not necessary. r Dr. Wheelwright, a psychia- Hos-- . trist on staff at McKay-De- e is the of director pital Center, Weber County Drug Abuse Clin-- r ic. He spoke recently at a psychiatric forum sponsored by McKay-De- e Hospitals Center for Counseling and Therapeutic : Services. When the Weber County Drug Abuse Clinic opened its doors in 1974, Dr. Wheelwright said, the leading cause of addiction was heroin or similar street drugs. Now 80 percent of all the people we see are addicted to prescription drugs, he said. Drugs are a major cause of . suicides and accidents, he noted. 'Heading the list for the most abused drug is alcohol, which "Dr. Wheelwright described as an extremely damaging drug. Accidental deaths occur from prescription drugs because too many people think, If one pill is good for them, two is better, Dr. Wheelwright said. In economic terms Americans spend about $9 billion a year for prescription drugs, he added. The notion that minor tranquilizers like Valium and Librium do not impair judgement and coordination is false, said Dr. Wheelwright. I shudder to hear a patient say, I was nervous so I took a couple of Valium before I came to see you. It is the same as saying, I had a couple of beers, both result in the same poor judgement. True addiction is defined by the World Health Organization as continued use of an agent - over an extended period of time, to the detriment of society, self or both, said Dr. Wheelwright. ; There is a distinction between emotional and physical addic-- " tion, Dr. Wheelwright explained. An emotional dependence develops when an individual thinks he needs the drug. True addiction is a physical depen- dency, the body comes to tolerate a substance, then requires they first started .using the drug, they would have had a very long night. They never would have awakened. People increase the dosage of prescribed medication, said Dr. Wheelwright, because they develop a tolerance then the dosage must be increased to achieve the effect they seek. A narcotics addiction begins in some people with the very first dose. All narcotics are addictive, he said, but this is not true of all sedative-typ- e drugs. The drugs that have the shortest effect seem to be the most addictive. Examples of these drugs include alcohol and heroin. Drugs with a moderate risk of addiction are minor tranquilizers, like Valium and Librium, he said. Less at risk are the longer acting drugs like phenobarbital and methadone, said Dr. Wheelwright. When withdrawing from psychoactive drugs, drugs which affect the mind or behavior, there are several stages that may be encountered, said Dr. Wheelwright. These include: tremors, Too many people think that if one pill is good for them, two will be better. Illegal drugs are obtained in a number of ways, he continued. These include forging prescriptions and buying drugs others have stolen from pharmacies. He said some people call in their own prescriptions to pharmacies, claiming to be the doctor or a doctors assistant. It is getting more and more common for people to call in their own prescriptions. Most pharmacies doublecheck with doctors to be certain the prescription is valid, Dr. Wheelwright said. Unfortunately, there are a few pharmacies who never call the doctor to verify a prescription. convulvisual hallucinations, A lot of prescriptions are writsions, and cerebral edema. ten because patients go to the alWithdrawal from narcotics doctor and they expect to get unfolds in same the ways way said Dr. Wheelsomething, for every person, said Dr. Sometimes it is easier for wright.
