LAYTON New homeowners often walk through their grassless back yards and gaze wistfully at the trees growing down the street, wishing for just a tiny bit of shade for their own parched patch of earth. So, eagerly, they visit their local nursery and spend consider- able time in picking out just the right tree, considering all of the needs of their home and the qualities of the species of tree they have chosen. Mrs. Ashby has become a master gardener since she began an interest in gardening. Through the Homemakers Almanac from the Utah State Extension Service she found out about the master gardener class taught by Dave Whiting at the Utah State Experimental farm. The Class consists of 40 hours of instruction and 40 hours of volunteering at the farm each year for three years. To become a certified master gardener this class must be completed. The first year was on landscaping and it really was fascinating, said Mrs. Ashby. The 40 hours of volunteer work seemed like a lot at first, but it really went fast. It was so much fun many of us put in more than our required hours. Its very intriguing. The more I worked the 12-1- -- , ' 44-in- shade-produci- , . We had projects and exams just like any college course, she explained. The hours of volunteer labor are used in various areas of the farm. The first year Mrs. Ashby did weeding and planting, the second year she had a vegetable garden. Applications for the class are taken in October with classes in January.
