Show 5B Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, May 9, 1984 Control Of Insects Important Spring is here. And along with the sunshine and blossoming flowers come the bugs. And the insects and mites. These small varmits can wreak havoc on a plant's leaves, buds and flowers. Since some plants are very susceptible to insects, control is important. There are several kinds of insects and mites that can be easily recoginzed and exterminated, say local lawn care specialists. Common insects that damage leaves,. buds and fruits are cater- pillars, beetles, leafminers, aphids and mites. The larvae of butterflies and moths are called caterpillars. These creatures chew the plants leaves and may bore into the plant to feed inside. If there are enough, caterpillars may completely defoliate several plants. Some caterpillars may weave a web on the branches. Beetles also damage plants by boring into a plant or by chew- ing on it. They can usually be spotted when a plants leaves curl, and a sticky liquid, which the aphids produce, collects on the leaves. Mites, which are similar to insects, are the tiniest of these pests and the hardest to control. They attack the leaves and suck the sap. Leaves turn yellow or orange and become dotted when infested with mites. Some mites form webs on the underside of the leaf. These pests also reproduce and spread rapidly. Scale insects and mealybugs attack the stems or branches of foliage. They may kill a whole branch or plant and secrete a waxy covering which, protects them. While mealybugs crawl freely about the plant, scale insects fasten themselves to a branch or trunk and lay under their covering. A crust may form if there are a large number of the pests on the plant. These insects are round or They lay their eggs under the covering. By feeding on the roots, they usually kill a plant. Root borers resemble grubs or caterpillars, and are usually white. They also hollow out the root system. Root-feedin- aphids, like their g other aphid cousins, suck the sap out of a plants roots. They are similar in shape to the aphids, and can also present a serious hazard to a plant. To control these insects, spray a commercial pesticide directly on the insect that is causing the damage. Spray the entire plant to kill any eggs that may have . leaf-feedi- been laid also.
