For Ms. FI itchers great efforts in education ,the local Sego Lily Chapter of 'the DAR awarded her the Qutstanding Social Studies Tealcher of the Year award. Ms. Fletcher, teacher of English and socifd studies at Woods Cross High,; is implementing all the necessary knowledge, energy and drive td improve her students analytical skills and critical thinking, j MS. Fletcher could be the person the president was thinking about when he urged excellence in education: Ms. .Fletcher teaches three hours of 11th grade English, 2 hours of 10th grade history; she is chairman of the social studies department at Woods Cross; she is one of theli25 teachers involved in a curriculum project for the Utah Council of the Humanities; she ii a graduate student at the Ur iversity of Utah in education administration; and, on top of fir that, she is a wife and mothe 4, All this activity' however, only makes Ms. Fk tcher energetic; she is currently involved in implementing a c imposition process for her Eng isji classes. This process, which; nC calls Higher Order of Thinking Skills," involves great emphasis on the students ability fWjcritical thinking, analysis, aid attention to basic skills. This' process of critical thinking is.often referred to as the New Basics. That does not mean that Ms. Fletcher lets go 6t the old bar school teachers know that they will never get rich teaching, but she deplores the enormous lack of recognition for the equally enormous amount of energy expended by good teachers. The demands on teachers are increasing, while the rewards are decreasing,, she said, and that is not the way to attract excellent teachers. of On the subject discipline..
