They took us out of our offense and we didnt adjust. We should have been able to, but we froze up, Ms. Avery said following the loss to Brighton. Review Sports Editor Bountiful the epitome of a finesse girls basketball team should have escaped the girls state tournament without bruised egos if not without bruised bodies. The Braves drew possibly the three most physical teams in the tournament. They played a tough game against West Jordan on March 6, but lost. That earned the Braves four rounds Thursday in the consolation bracket with the Weber Warriors, which Bountiful beat 3 on a tip in at the the buzzer. I may have seen worse officiating sometime, but I cant remember when. I also cant remember when I heard more legitimate complaints from disinterested observers. Layton coach Brent Checketts, amid praise for Davis players and coaches, said the officiating of the game between the Lancers and the Darts Thursday was terall-o- ment. They had stayed close enough during the game to take command at the end. But Saturday the Rams proved they were the best team in the state, keeping the Darts at bay and finishing off a perfect 24-- 0 .The Darts werent supposed to even be there, playing for the ' championship. Review Sports Editor The state girls basketball tournament held at Murray High School last week included the movers and shakers of the game this season, but the way, the tournament was officiated youd think it was the bruisers and breakers instead. There was more contact dur-in- g y affair than youd the expect to see at a National convention of Siamese twins. I saw more hacks than in all the slasher movies ever made. And I saw more chops than Rover could eat in a lifetime. These games made Roller Derby tame by comparison. Seriously, the officiating was indicated. Talk about three games of a contrast in styles.. Before the tournament the Braves wouldnt have known a body check if it ran up and slapped them in the face, and that frequently happened during these three games. 33-4- . Im was taken away very embittered right now. I feel very disappointed for the girls, Checketts said. . Sour Grapes? Perhaps, if it werent for the fact that nearly every coach I talked to during the tournament expressed dissatisfaction, if not exhasperation at the officiating. One coach added some into insight into the criticism. The main problem is that theyre letting way too much contact go on. They try to officiate girls basketball like it was boys basketball and its not. Girls dont have the same strength boys have. Its a different game. , Ive seen many of the same officials at the tournament work boys games during the season and do a good job, but few of the 30 or so games I saw at the tournament I would call well offrom-us- . I know- - sometimes we dont play like some of the other teams do, said Bountiful coach Jill Ayery, but how do you teach them (the players) to act one way on the court when theyve always been taught to act , another way off the court. Its not that the Braves don't ; play aggressive basketball, they play good position defense and showed a promising, if erratic, offense. - . One of, the Braves biggest problems all season long has ficiated. dont know what the officiating has been like all season for girls basketball, but its clear from this tournament that something needs to be done. Officials need to meet in the and make some decisions about what kinds of calls they need to make, and what are the differences and similarities between officiating boys and girls' basketball. If the officials continue to officiate the way they did at the state tournament, theyre going to eventually be forced to allow pads and helmets for all girls, or simply forget about setting the basketball standards up and call the game rugby.
