One year, she said, when her children were much smaller, the family was having a real financial struggle. With no extra money available to make a trip to Idaho, where they had often spent Thanksgiving with Susans parents, the Beddes were also without means for a turkey dinner at home. Recalling that her husband, Jerry, was scheduled to work the graveyard shift on the eve of Thanksgiving that year, Susan remembers feeling helpless and depressed, until shortly before midnight when the doorbell rang. Then the sadness turned to fear, as neither Mrs. Beddes or her awakened children dared open the door. Sometime later, the telephone rang. I didnt even want to answer it, Susan recalls, but I did. and a deep mans voice nearly scared me out of my wits. He said he was the Great Turkey, and tolc me to look out the window. As the frightened mother and her children mustered up the courage to draw back the curtains, she recalled that the light from the living room spilled out onto the front porch to illuminate two full sacks of Thanksgiv- ing groceries.
