Show HillAFB H Continued From Page 4D Hill Field officially became Hill Air Force Base that year as the Air Force began operation as a seperate branch of the service. Like other military bases, however, Hill faced an uncertain postwar future. Hill Field commander Col. Frank D. Hackett reassured his base. We have ev- ery assurance from our headquarters that Hill Field will continue to grow in importance and therefore, has a secure future. The doubts about the bases future continued until the outbreak of the Korean War in 950. The 6 aircraft stored at Hill were put back into service in the Far East. The base received a boost into the modern jet age when it was assigned the task of modifying the 9 Scorpion, and continued later with the maintenance of the 4 and To handle the jet aircraft, a new 13,500-foheavy duty runway was built in 1957. In 1955, Hill AFB and the old Ogden Arsenal located on the west complex of the base were combined. This doubled the size of the base with a total acreage of 6,324 acres with more than 1,170 buildings. In Jan. 1959, the Ogden Air Logistics Command was selected to be the manager of The Minuteman missile. This assured the base of much continued support from the government. By the end of 1959, there were nearly 12,000 civilians and 1,000 military people assigned to Hill. In 1965, the Titan missile workload was transferred to Hill which already handled the Minuteman program. With the expanded workload, millions of dollars were appropriated to build new' facilities. 1 B-2- F-8- F-8- 4, F-- 1, F-1- 6. ot ft If 1 i f ! ? M I 8 ? H J ?!! the Great Salt Lake. These continued additions to the base resulted in tremendous growth of the base and area. By the end of 1965, base personnel and employees had grown to 18,436 with a payroll of $116 million. As 1969 ended, there were 20,838 personnel with a payroll of $183 million. Many key Air Force units moved to Hill in the 1970s. Included in this was the 1550th Aircrew Training and Test Wing 1 which had assigned in 1,400 military and 100 civilian personnel. The major coup was the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing Of the Tactical Air Command which moved from Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand in late 1975. The 338th was First d equipped with and later received its first 6 in 1979.
