Show 2D Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1983 y Vikings Detfeat Falcon In Double Overtime Game By BARRY KAWA Review Staff As the bap.CLEARFIELD tism of fire test with his new team, Viewmont Coach Warren Hatch faced a crucial decision Friday in his teams opening game against the Clearfield Falcons. 3 With the score for Clearfield in the second overtime period, Viewmont had the ball at d line on the Falcon fourth down. Hatch called a timeout and considered going for a chip-shfield goal attempt, which would have tied the game and sent it into a third overtime period, or going for the touchdown against a defense that allowed his team only five yards rushing in the 16-1- one-yar- ot first half. With a play reminiscent of 'Green Bay Packer Bart Starrs plunge to defeat the Dallas in the 1967 NFL championship game, Viking running back Shawn Wilson powered his way into the end zone to give win. 6 his team a There was never a doubt that we would go for the win," Hatch said. We had gone through two overtimes and we were very ' lucky to still be in the ballgame. We went out and talked it over with our players, who agreed to lets go for it. After the winning score, the Clearfield players and fans stood in shock at the turnaround that had occurred. Clearfield then scored a quick touchdown and lined up for the extra point try for the win. Much to the delight of the Clearfield players and fans who went swarming onto the field, Ray Dixon kicked the ball through the uprights for the apparent extra point. , However, an encroachment penalty was caljed on Viewmont and, under high school rules, the ball was declared dead and the penalty was assessed. A shaken Dixon sliced the second try to the right and the teams went into a second overtime period. We got hammered by the worst rule in high school football, said Clearfield Coach Brent Hancock. Its only a rule in high school football and not a rule in- college and the pros. That shows its a bad rule. We won the game but got caught up in technicalities. The penalty was on them but it cost us the game." The Falcons opened the game in the first quarter with a halfback pass from quarterback Jeff Parry to Hal Moore to Mike Henrie to give Clearfield an early 0 lead. Viewmont threatened ort the next series but was stopped at line on a the Falcon o situation. Wilson d loss was thrown for a as the swarming Falcon defense - 48-ya- rd 7-- 10-ya- rd fourth-and-tw- five-yar- ended the early scoring opportunity. The Falcons large defensive line pressured quarterback Jeff Meservy repeatedly and gave him little time to throw. Meservy, resembling another Viking quarterback named scrambled all over the ' field and was usually able to get the ball off. The score remained 0 until the Vikings managed to tie it up d with a carry from Troy Gortat with 8:30 left in the game. Clearfield threatened again and managed to move the ball down to the Viewmont line with five minutes left, but Moore was stopped inches short of a crucial first down on a situation. Clearfield got the ball back on line with a the Falcon minute left and decided to run out the clock and take its chances in the overtime period, 'ultimately losing the game. Hatch said he learned a lot about his team and will be able to better prepare them for the Layton game this week. We were extremly fortunate and very, very lucky to haye won last week," Hatch said. We feel we have some areas well have to improve in. But theres still a long ways to go in the sean son. The Vikings will be at Friday with the kickoff time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Falcons will be hosting Woods Cross at 7:30 p.m. Tar-kento- n, 7-- one-yar- 24-ya- rd fourth-and-thr- 22-ya- rd Lay-to- Woods Cross Fourth Quarter Drive Nips South WOODS CROSS If you were looking for proof that this years Woods Cross football team is better than last years 8 squad, you should have seen the Wildcats fourth quarter drive.
