The Braves took the opening kickoff and concocted a pleasant of standard running mixture plays, passes, screens and a dash of draws to bring themselves down to Layton Highs 18-ya- rd line. The Braves were forced into a situation and attempted a pass into the end zone, which went wide of an third-and-ni- open receiver. A field goal was the only alternative in an effort to keep the drive from spoiling. But that, , too, went wide of its mark. It was Bountifuls best drive of the night, and instead of coming away from it inflated said Braves Coach Kim Peterson, the Braves left Shangri-L- a just as with no they had entered it and no wins on board the points on the record. , The drive, although it happened in the opening minutes of the game, was a major turning point in the game, according to Peterson. The stalled drive was one of the deciding factors in Laytons 10-- 0 win, but it wasnt the entire reason for Bountifuls loss. The Lancers were able to control the ball, create turnovers and stop the Braves whenever it seemed to be of the most importance. Layton used the running of Tom Kidd and three interceptions by Mike Trujillo to control the Braves. NORTH OGDEN During practices, Davis High Football Coach Ward Sawley told everyone who asked that he believed his 1983 Darts were further along than any team be has coached at Davis. ' But few people expected the Darts to look as good as they did Friday while drubbing Weber High, 40-And fewer people, including Sawley, expected the inflationary score. You dont expect to beat anybody by a score like that, said Sawley. But, he added, I wished they would all go like ' that. r As coaches can tell you, a 40-- 7 win is conducive to a good nights sleep and low blood pres- 7. , sure. . ... That score remained unchanged until the third quarter when Layton came back with a drive of its own to end the quarter. The Lancers drove 59 yards on drive with Kidd finally carrying the ball d over from the line for the touchdown. Kidd also kicked the extra point to end the nights their touchdown three-yar- scoring. Like most coaches with an opening night win on his record, Layton Coach Gary Hansen was happy with his teams performance. I was pleased with the efforts for our first game, said Hansen. We held them when we had to stop them. But the game was not well played, and first game problems, such as penalties, were prevalent. But, said Hansen, a team never runs its offense as well as it wants to, even at the end of the season. And the Lancers offense, besides the interceptions and returns by Trujillo, was the option play. We executed and we didnt execute, said Hansen of his consistent Layton offense. Drives were stopped not only by the Layton defense, but by execution, or the lack of it, said Quarterback Rob Faddis kept several drives alive by avoiding the Layton rush with his scrambling. They put good pressure on him, but the pressure wasnt horrendous, said Peterson. On the other Bountiful pos- - last Friday, 35-- 9. Its hard to play a team like Judge, said Royals Coach Ernest Jacklin. Theyre in midseason form, y One reason Judge is so far ahead of the other schools, said Jacklin, is that the Bulldog coaches have more control over their players during the summer. Although the game wasnt a complete disaster for the Royals, the third quarter was, said Jacklin. We got a kid hurt at halftime, and the kid we put in his place" wasnt, really Jready, I guess. Doug Nielsen, the Royals starting inside linebacker and tailback, suffered a rib injury - INv ed to play in the third quarter. But, believe it or not, Davis did have some offensive trouble against the Warriors, trouble that Sawley hopes to solve Jn practice this week before open-- . ing the home season against Ben Lomond Friday night. We just didnt block the outside people, he said. They did a good job of fighting off and containing us. They did a good job of flowing to the outside. So, Davis didnt run outside as well as Sawley would have liked. It doesnt take a genius to figure out where the Darts did downs. The touchdown passes were run, Sawley said. Naturally, Weber became concerned with the Darts strength up the middle and neglected to defend against the pass. The passes were, as Sawley so aptly put it, high percentage passes. Davis doesnt throw many of. the other kind. Besides the outside running game, Sawley also said the Darts need to execute their punt returns better, and that phase of the game will receive work this set up by the week. - But Davis next opponent, gain yardage.
