Id was also impressed with Woods pick us this year." Thats not Cross players. Our region is pretty damn tough, he said. Highland is strong and Bountiful and East are capable of winning the title. ' Woods Cross has as good as team as theyve had. Viewmont should also be strong, said Sawley. Hatch' agrees with 'Sawleys prediction that Region Four is competitive, top to bottom. Bountiful will be big as usual, said Hatch, who was an assistant at Bountiful before moving to Viewmont this year. East usually has good size and hits real hard, 'but they lack a little consistency. Highland year in and year out has a good competitive program. If they have the kids, they do well. Last year Highland had the biggest sophomores Ive ever seen." The . balance Region Four coaches talk about was evident last year. Although Davis easily won the championship with a 0 record and Viewmont took second with a 1 record, no other team was able to put together a .500 region season. 5-- 4-- Weve sat soma goals but wa hava to ba raalistic. Right now, we want to go undafeatad. Whan that goal Is taken away then we will set some other goals like winning the region championship and state championship." Bountiful Coach Kim Peterson But there are other factors that could determine the title, includ-- , ing injuries, something Sawley is particularly worried about. Injuries to two or three key people, on any team, he said, could mean the difference between a . winning and losing record. , Injuries hurt Woods Cross badly last year, and although they werent totally responsible for the Cats record, they didnt help, said Eldracher. We hope to be a little luckier .this year, he said. And he hopes that luck carries over to the playing field.1 Were working hard, and they say if you work hard youll get la thlt Woods Croat yoor to go tb the state playoff? "I think It could bo. Its late August dnd football season is only two days away, and the predictions will become stale by then. Its a long road to Novem-- 1 ber and the state championships in Salt Lake City, and a myriad of events can happed along the way. Stay tuned and see if pick' ing a winner in Region Four is ' as easy as it seems. 4 Its a rebuilding year Wa are further sense that we have a new offense and new defense. We havent had any real in the ahead this year than weve ever been. Our senior class is solid and weve got returning letterman, which is good." problems as such. It takes a little time changing terminology. Viewmont Coach Warren Hatch Davis Coach Ward Sawley t Region One Gives Fans Variety By KENT SOMERS Review Sports Editor Its almost like a big city, this Region One. If you want to see something, just wait a few minutes and jt will come strolling by. We have more depth than weve had for years. We have better unity than we have had in a few years. We have better speed than in the past." Layton Coach Gary Hansen y Over on one block, you have the old, rich codgers of the league Roy, Bonneville, four Clearfield and Layton schools that have earned their fortunes by taking turns beating each other season after season. On another block, you have the talented but unsuccessful Weber High, one of the largest schools in the region. But the Warriors have never put together a football team that wins consistently and they swap head coaches like used cars. Down in the new neighborhood, two blocks away, resides the immigrants, the Box Elder Bees, who are moving into the ranks this year after losing a classi fight to remain in the 4-- A 3-- ROY 4C DAVIS 5C A fication. But dont stay up nights worrying about the Bees. Theyre coming off a Region Five championship and could be strong again this year. Box Elder should adapt well in Region One, a region that is notoriously tough every year. As veteran Roy High Coach Ernie Jacklin puts it, There are no Cottonwood Highs in it (the region). Just for reference, Cottonwood finished last in Region Three last year and didnt win a game in league play. Last years statistics to back Jacklins statement. Only one game separated the top three teams in the region last year with Sky View, which has now departed the region, winning the championship with a 1 record. Bonneville and Clearfield were Weber and Roy next at went and Layton was But look for things to reverse this year, particularly for Roy and Layton. Both teams should 4-- 3-- 2-- 2. 4. 3, be much improved and will challenge for the region title. Jacklin said his team will be better than last years team, which scored only 33 points in region . play, an average of just over a ' . touchdown a game. Jacklin said he also likes Lay- -' tons chances of making a comeback this season. Layton had a solid JV and a good sophomore bunch, said Jacklin. But, he admitted, some may not look at Layton like I do. Layton Coach Gary Hansen also thinks his team has improved over last years club, and thinks ' a balanced attack will allow the Lancers to score more than 28 points, last years total, during region play. Bonneville, the coaches said, is always good, partially because of a the solid program Coach Thom Budge runs there. The Lakers won the state championship in 1980 and finished second last year. - ...6C CLEARFIELD BOUNTIFUL 6C 7C LAYTON WOODS CROSS VIEWMONT 7C 8C Theyll bean' improvement easily. We have better skill kids than last year. Nielsen can run with the best He has excellent speed for Well have a n football team that will make It exciting for the fans. If we give Parry time to throw the football, he can do some Clearfield things. Coach Brent Hancock wide-ope- his size." Roy Coach Ernie Jacklin Illustrations by Dan Burr Photos by Dan Miller Rodney Wright J, kA Clearfield should also make a run for first place in the region after losing in the first round of the state playoffs last year. Clearfield is notorious for its good defensive clubs, and the Falcons allowed only 34 points last year during the five region games. If Clearfield can do that this year, and if quarterback Jeff Parry can guide the Falcons to end zones, Coach Brent Hancocks team will be hard to beat. Now its time to step into the unknown, the place that also goes by the name of Brigham City, to look at the Box Elder team. Local coaches all say they know very little about Jhe Bees, other than they return several starters, and should have good linemen this year. How good , or bad, Weber will be is unknown, said the coaches. But the Warriors could improve their fortunes under Coach Rod Buckwoldt. |
