Dawn M. Gatherum that correct pruning directs the plants growth, improves its health, increases production and rejuvenates old trees. He recommended that pruning be done once a year, except for nut tees, which have slower growth and only require prun ex-plain- ing every other year. Gatherum said the best time to prune is in the dead of winter. Winter pruning helps prevent the spread of disease and insects, he said. Grapes should be cut back quite heavily to insure good size and quality. It is also best to prune grapes to one central trunk and then allow several laterals to be trained on a trellis, wire or along a fence, he noted.
