Show u Living Review I', M Outdoor Cooking Rain The Meal Should Satisfy By SUSAN TANNER HOLMES Review Correspondent Cooking a meal is like attending a good ballet or the symphony, the individual should come away satisfied. Thats the way Frank R. Allen, 1056 S. 200 E., Farmington, treats his guests, whether he is cooking for the family or for 300. The important thing to remember is people. If you cater to the individual and make that person feel satisfied, your dinner will be a success, said Allen. Allen first became interested in cooking over 25 years ago. On an outing with the youth, he was appalled at the tin can approach to cooking. You couldnt believe how those kids ate and what they ate. He vowed never to let them eat that rot again. He believes high class people, and everyone I know is a high class person, should be treated to first class eating regardless of where they are. Its the details, according to Allen that make the event a success. Most people are just not willing to spend the time. They give little thought of how the eating is going to take place. Instead, they are too concerned with the decorations, the place or the entertainment. If you are concerned about people, youll take care of the details and everyone will go away pleased. Allen has put on hundreds of dinners from barbecues to formal sit down dinners for high political and religious figures. He believes that you have to work like mad to have everything right. The care with which Allen puts a meal together is the same kind of care that he used when he worked the wood to make his own ukulele and banjo. He spent hours sanding, gluing, working and staining the wood to give the instrument the right perfection of sound. To him, planning a meal should be that way. On a camp-ou- t with a group, it is not unusual to find Allen awake and working at 4 a.m. to have everything prepared and ready to eat at 8 a.m. Long lines and scant meals are the two main sins in entertaining, according to Allen. An inventor as well as an artist, writer and designer, Allen developed his own barbecue grills. They provide for proper heating and cooking. He made six to insure fast cooking. Chicken is an excellent choice for an outside rotisserie. When he couldnt find one that worked well, he built his own. It cooks four small chickens at a time. When cooking chickens it is important to make sure they are done, says Allen, You can tell when they are ready when the last little bit of juice stops dripping theyre perfectly tender Page 5A North Edition Lakeside Review Wednesday, April 6, 1983 or Shine The Mirror is Lying day when my By SHARON NAUTA STEELE some runny nosed kid in the grocery store who mistakenly refers to me as that lady over there, but its usually someone much too young to know the difference between a lady and a girl. If you are cooking for more people than the rotisserie will hold, he advises not cooking the chickens quite as much, then placing them in a warming oven, where they will continue to cook. There are a lot of ways to cook hamburgers, said Allen. Some people like them thin, others really thick, some like them grilled, while others like them charcoal broiled.
