The Day, along with a partner, started the company in 1965, but his real interest in paints and down exactly what The Day Company of Clearfield does is like trying to catch a waterbug each skittering over a pond time you think you have it in your grasp, it darts in another direction. It would be easy if you could just say the firm refinishes and paints appliances. But to do that you would have to ignore the antique automobiles in the back of the dusty shop in the Freeport Center, You would also have to ignore the sandblasting shop, which resembles a bombed farm house where people like Audie Murphy used to hide in World War II movies. Hal Day says his business' is diversified, admitting that it wasnt really planned that way. WeveTdnd of been the pissin post of the Freeport Center,' Day says bluntly. If someone couldnt handle something they would ask can you do this for us? If we couldnt do it we usually knew someone who could. This ; j and. Servicer antique automobiles began when he was a small boy. I used to go up and hang out in a body shop in Layton. They would give me a dime or a nickel for sweeping the floors and let me think I was helping. Days interest in cars has not diminished since those childhood days. Even though he is older, with grey hair and mustache, and does less work on the cars than he used to, he still enjoys seeing the transformation of a restored car. Its still a thrill to see one roll out of here when they bring it in crates and boxes, he says. The northwest part of the building is an antique car dealers dream of what a used car lot should be. A 34 Chevy, a 41 Chevy, a Model A pickup, a 64 Coupe de Ville and a 65 Cadillac convertible are all lined up, due to be restored by The Day Com- pany. Dust covers the autos like wheat covers the plains in early , June. The dust will soon be cleared, the cars torn down to their skivvies and renovated, piece by piece, and then dressed again, down to the last hubcap and lug nut. haphazard versatility., has enabled The Day Company to work on appliances as well as oil pipelines, and old cars as well as nuclear power plants. This little, dumb company has been involved in some of the major projects in the county, Antiques pliances and sometimes the requests were a little strange. We had one fellow that wanted all his metal appliances in I was black, Day recalls. wondering about the judgment of that fellow, but I went to look at it and it was outstanding what they had done with it. Youd be surprised what people can come up with. Day said that although he has been able to accommodate most of the requests, however bizarre, there have been times Ive gotten into things and wondered which way I could run to get out of them. Besides helping customers, Day has also been able to help his community, serving on the Davis County Mental Health Advisory Board, and he won a national award in 1980 for hiring the handicapped. Theres a lot of work to do (in mental health), and when people are down like they are now, Its important, Day says as he smokes a cigarette, relaxing behind his desk. His office looks comfortable, but messy. But when you look around, you dont see anything that could be rearranged. In that way, it is like Days life. He has no desire to change anything especially in his business. You can say its versatile or happenstance, and you may have a hard time describing it or pinning it down, but to Hal Day it has been, and fun. is, just plain The cars are fixed the old way, Day says, because you simply dont repair a 34 Chevy with new, fandangled plastic. But once you get past the antique automobiles, The Day Company is modern. You dont get to work on the Alaska Pipeline by not keeping up with new methods and technology. The firm sandblasted and chemically coated the pipe and fittings for the project, using Days and his son, Tads exper- tise. In fact, chemical coating was one of Days original interests. I started out in college wanting to be an engineer. I like chemistry and branched off into chemical engineering. After traveling on the road for several paint companies,' Day opened a shop in the Ogden airport, painting planes. Day, along with others, worked out a system to duplicate the factory finish of applicances and other articles and opened his original business in 1965. y And up until now, the has never had to advertise.
