Show BOX ELDER LOSES IN DEBATE last friday evening the high school debating tournament was held at salt lake city and box elder high school was represented by both the affirmative firma tive and negative teams each team having won over all opponents in the northern division tryouts which were held at ogden some weeks ago i anth tea teaise in arrive in salt lake tuey learned that the rules ot of tournament provided for only two speakers and the tha local teams were composed of three aspea speakers kers athis was a serious handicap for or the reason that the time had been assigned the subject matter divided into three parts darts and each speaker had paid attention to only his or her individual part of 0 the discussion when the announcement ment was made that the team going into the contest would bould have to be cut down a readjustment hadbo be made at the very last moment and tho the speakers had to cram crain their heads with facts that were unfamiliar and go into the contest with a feeling of uncertainty by a toss of a coin it was decided which team should speak and the negative speakers from the high school won place they were J C knudson and albert anderson and owen owens the boys made a grand showing and despite the handicap under which they went to the wire made such a fine impression that the supervisor who had to leave before the contest was ended passed a slip of paper to john W peters who wag waa looking after the interests of the local speakers and asked litin him what he had to tear fear from such a bunch even under the handicap the impression went out thru the audience that box elder would win out but the decision of the judges gave it to beaver high school by a close margin the winning team was composed of a young lady and a young gentleman and they had their arguments right at their tongue ends having worked it all out together the work of the local speakers was of such a character however that even though defeated they won and many high compliments were paid bald them tor for their effort |
