Show OF W M effers crew of forty that started for ph 1 probably captured Cap tired by can n hals of terra del fuego chicago A special to the record herald from new aorl says eaten by cannibals was probably the fate of the crew of forty sailors that took the big sailing ship arthur S sewell out of philadelphia april 3 on the start of her long voyage carrying coal to the philipp nes hord has just been received at the maritime maii time exchange that the vessel waa wrecked near terra del fuego and all signs point to the sun ivors having been captured by the cannibals that infest the islands in that vicinity the news of the wreck and the almost tain fate of the crew came from the sealing steamer since the arthur S sewell sailed not one word was received regard ng her until a letter came on thursday from the nor begian sealer the sewell s first stopping point wis to have been seattle the frid reports that on august 29 while cruising near the southeast headland of noir island half way be tween capre pillar and cape horn the lookout reported a derelict ahead the derelict proved to be a tour mast ed square rigged ship that in every way answered the description of the sewell As the wreck was evidently tery deceit the captain made an investigation in the hope of discovering some of the possible sun ivors on the shore of noir island landing party from the nor begian vessel discovered traces brov ing that a considerable party from the wreck had made its way to that land the trail led away from the beach the sailors from the fol lowed the trail as far as they could make it out but finally abandoned the search oring to the danger fram the cannibals in innab t the island the natives on the islands in that part of the sea are cannibals of the fiercest kind and shipwrecked sailors could have little hope of escaping arom them |
