Nonwage fringe benefits received by state employees in Utah are considerably more generous than those provided by private-sectemployers in the state. This was the conclusion reached by Utah Foundation, the private research organization. According to the study, the total cost of direct and indirect benefits for state employees during the 1982-8- 3 fiscal year was of the state payroll. $115.7 million, or 51.7 This included $69.3 million in direct benefits for such items as retirement, social security, insurance, etc. and $46.4 million in indirect costs for compensating employees for time not actually worked (holidays, vacations, sick leave, break time, etc.). The report indicates that there has been a decided improvement in the nonwage benefits provided to Utah state employees over the past decade. Usually, there is a special advantage for employees to receive increased nonwage fringe benefits as part of any new salary package, since such benefits generally are not subject to federal and or private-sect- employees in Utah work for or benefits that are provided by these small employers usually do not begin to approach those furnished by the state. In making comparisons between state employees, employees and private-sectthe foundation analysis observes that the or state provided substantially greater nonwage benefits in most instances. Especially singled out was the state retirement program, which the report termed extremely generous. emA recent survey of private-secto- r Births A boy to Rodney and Stacy Stephens, Price.
