Show 4 Recreation Guide, May, 1983 GDCCH DIVER AUTO PARTG IRC. Castle Country is sporting paradise Good fishing and camping spots dot the mountain areas of Castle Country as well as areas of historic interest and scenic beauty. Superb lake fishing awaits the sportsman all along the Wasatch Plateau from Scofield and Gooseberry reservoirs in the north, Electric Lake in the center, to Joes Valley and Ferron reservoirs in the south. Or discover your own fishing lake hidden in the mountains, of catching the run-osnowbanks that sparkling blanket the mountains each winter. The lakes and streams with trout. are Deer and elk live abundantly in these mountains and can, of course, be hunted only in season. Duck, sage grouse, geese, and other game birds also make good hunting in ff well-stock- ed season. All season fun In summer and fall, improved campgrounds are sprinkled throughout the area for the convenience of campers. On Scofield Reservoir, 20 miles south of Highway 6, the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation maintains a campground and boat dock. Its a good place to start a day of waterskiing. View from the top backtrack toward Scofield, on your right will be a sign pointing to Eccles Canyon, your route to the Skyline Drive. This unpaved road is not kept open in the winter, but in the summer it offers one of the most spectacular views of the high country. On a clear day the vista stretches across the settled valleys of Sanpete County and out to the mountains of Nevada on the west ... to the southeast lie the snowcapped peaks of the LaSals and, beyond that, the Colorado As you . Plateau. This scenic drive traverses the full length of the mountains from the Scofield Reservoir and its town full of memories to the small, farming settlement of Ferron. Trails to adventure Scenic trails crisscross the Skyline Drive tempting hikers to stop and explore. You might follow the trail of the Emery County Mormon pioneers as they crossed from their homes in Sanpete to begin a new life in the valleys to the east.' Or find the marker in Cottonwood Canyon, above Orangeville, where the first pioneer child was born during the difficult journey. Near Ferron Reservoir, eighteen miles above Orangeville, there are some privately-owne- d cabins for in the boats well as as rent, summer and snowmobiles in the winter. Driving south out of Scofield, youll pass other coal mine workings where tunnels run deep into the earth. After a drive, the road ends at the town of Clear Creek. It was begun in 1894 by the local coal company which still owns the land. Residents own only the houses used largely for summer vacations. six-mi- le Season of use Joes Valley Campground May 20 to Oct. 1; Joes Valley Marina May 20 to Nov. 15; Joes Valley Cam Upper pground June 1 to Oct. 1; Picnic Ferron Canyon to Oct. 15; Ferron Reservoir CamJune 1 to Oct. 1; pground June 1 to Skyhaven Resort Nov. 15.
