| Show HUNDREDS RENDERED HOMELESS BY FLOOD PORTION OF PATTERSON N J OCCUPIED BY POORER CLASSES IS SUBMERGED ot are compelled to their home and seek safety on high Ground Only one life reported lost the city of patterson N J so re bently swept by fire is now over whelmed by flood three weeks ago the greater part of its bus ness section was burned out and bunday the ter occupied by the poor classes was inundated hundreds of families are homeless and for miles around the city is under gatei so far but one death has been reported the great peril now is that the street raceway which supplies water power for all m along the water front may v this would cause great loss to the manufacturing districts expert engineri engin eci s have placed dynamite belliv the bridge and if necessary it will be ed off this would open a new channel for the vol ume of water held there and diverting it will save a good deal of property the fire of three weeks ago while causing a damage to property to the total of nearly 83 d d not create tuch suffering and widespread desola tion as the flood the district for a mile along the riverfront from spruce hill to straight street and two blocks north and five blocks south of the river nearly a mile in width is covered w th water and in I 1 some places to the second story of dwellings in this d strict are situated the rogers locomotive and sev eral silk mills and dye near by live f illy families who have been driven from their tenements several hundred of these people were taken from their houses in boata and barges amid the scenes of much excitement citizens from all parts of the city have poured in loads of blankets clothing and provisions city em of eveia department work like beavers in their efforts to relieve the d stressed there was a lack of boats to cope with the emergency and a wagon load was sent over from in good time to give excellent service in the work of rescue rich ards a carpenter lost his life after making several successful tr ps on each of which he brought three or tour persons his boat was upset and he was swept away in the waters wl ich were rushing with the force of a m larace two alarms of fire were turned in during tl e afternoon and it looked as if the elements comb ning to de stroy the city the firemen who were help ng to remove the people from were forced to take three hours to fight the flames neither loss was b g but as a brisk wind was blowing the danger was great on hamilton avenue near the river two new bu edings were undermined the flood collapsed and were swept away ahe arch street bridge collapsed in the afternoon and all the other bridges are completely submerged ahe bo ler and engine looms of several of the b g mills are ten feet under water |
