Show Wednesday, January BO, 1902 Drop second region game Dinos can't douse Devils SPRINGVILLE - Carbon High didnt have the right ingredients here Friday to defeat a spirited quint of Red Devil cagers. It wasnt a superior Springville team which dropped Carbon and to an 2 region record, but a team which knew where the basket was and when to turn the game into a victory. The Dinos couldnt keep momentum through the second half it had grabbed just before halftime and had trouble grabbing baskets in a dreary second half performance. The Red Devils jumped to a lead midway through the first period, with the sluggish Dinos not n able to penetrate the Devils defense. 61-5- 1 0-- 9-- 2 man-to-ma- David Waltons successful outside shooting managed to keep Springville from completely dominating that first period. In the second quarter, Carbon coach Mike Kernodle switched n from into a 2 zone which got the Dinos back into the contest and shielded center Troy Moynier who nabbed his third personal foul in the first quarter. A steal by Tony Gianoulis and a 3-- man-to-ma- CEU field goal by Steve Burge in the final seconds capped the Dino comeback which put them in the locker room with a tie and 32-a- should ll have provided the momentum Carbon needed to carry the second half. Kernodle said he wanted the Dino front line to continue the get tough game under the basket that proved to be effective against the Red Devil offense. However, the Red Devils didnt cooperate with the plan and got tough with their own defense and began to cause Dino turnovers. Carbon miscues were turned into Springville buckets and Dinos never really got back into the race. A 19 percent field percentage hindered the Dinos comeback tries even though the offense seemed to be going smoothly, Kernodle said. The offense was flowing really well, but we just couldnt hit the shot when we had it, he said. I cant really worry about that and I may have to accept the fact that we are going to shoot 25 or 35 percent from the floor. The Dinos have only had one Three-straig- ht game this season above the 40 percent mark. Poor shooting will have to turn Carbon into a tough defensive team, Kernodle added. "Its going be tough on us to try and hold teams below 40 percent, which is average field goal percentage, he said. Darin Judd turned in a good performance in the Dinos loss. The senior forward pumped in 15 points and was joined by Walton with 10 points to lead Carbon scorers. The Dinos host Spanish Fork at 7:30 p.m. Friday and will try to climb out of the Region Eight cellar over the Dons. Weve got to make our break and move right now, Kernodle said. Even though its early, I think we would have a tough time going for the championship right now and should concentrate on the The playoffs. Devils made it a clean sweep over Carbon, dropping the junior 6 and handing the varsity sophomores their first loss to a sopohomore team, Duane Vasten scored 18 points for the Dino junior varsity and Dave Budo added 14. 65-5- 60-4- evens conference record hot and cold shooting weekend produced a pair of home court wins for the College of Eastern Utah mens basketball team. The Eagles evened their Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference record at 1 with a 5 win over Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday. comeback They added a 6 win Saturday over the Brigham Young University junior varsity, overall giving the Eagles a mark. The Eagle hoops were steaming in Fridays game. CEU came out with the hot hand against an extremely fast Colorado quint. Weak side jumpers put the A 1-- 68-6- 6-- Eagles out front early, while the visitors had trouble finding each other on the court, let alone scoring points. Spartan coach Paul Conrad said classes havent begun at the Colorado campus, and he was lucky to suit up his starting five. However, this should take nothing away from the Eagles. Ted Guinn, Jeff Christensen and Bent Jenson handled the quick CNCC lineup with ease and broke by the startled Spartans on several occasions. The Eagles jumped to a 3 halftime lead and kept the pressure on CNCC in the second half. The most pleasant performance Fridays game was produced by Eagle forward John Boswell. The Hillcrest High star scored 13 points and collected 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles in the backboard department. Boswell had gotten off to a slow start this year, hampered by a sore knee and cold shooting touch. I decided I wanted to improve my game, Boswell said. And I figured it was up to me. He also attributed his rebounding success to teammates, Scott Wallace and Rand Hendricks. If we do the job boxing out the area, he said. Like Scott gets his man and Rand his, then we will get the ball and tonight it happened to fall to me. Coach Curt Jenson said he was pleased with the Eagles team defense against the quick CNCC guards and with their 60 percent field goal percentage. does not plan to Wildlife Service.
