We want to do as proficient a job as we can, Barnes says. It takes a certain skill to be able to put an animal to sleep without pain. Barnes and Wright are good at their job. They feel bad when something goes wrong. They are concerned when one cat goes into convulsions for 30 seconds before the drug does its work. You dont like this part of the job, Barnes continues, but you get used to it... I guess like a soldier gets used to killing or a guy gets used to working in a morgue. But Barnes, Wright, Zehnder and the other animal control officer, Scott G. Cooper, have a strong sense of purpose in their work. They have an uncommon sensitivity for animals and appear to be sincere in their desire to be humane in their weekly dirty job. We have mixed feelings about Barnes ex animal euthanasia, but we know it is plains, necessary to keep the stray animal population under control. Somebody has to do it.. .and do it in a way that is kind to the animals. What we want, really, are responsible pet owners in Carbon County. Zehnder says a lot of people do not realize the responsiblity that comes with pet ownership. Caring for a dog, cat or other pet is a lot like taking care of children. The animal must be loved, fed, nurtured and have its medical and physical needs taken care of just like other members of the family. You would be surprised at some pet - owners attitudes, Barnes adds. We live in a throw - away society, and some people just discard their pets when they get tired of them. Those discarded pets usually try to fend for themselves, scrounging garbage, roaming the county and getting into trouble. Usually, they end up at the shelter, where most of them are expires May 19 N t assume the v Ijt stl$149 CHUNK'S PHARMACY HANDY MARKET I I , - .... reproduction old lime Path tor palm, Bench deck lawn family Made party room to test forever J I I iron legs and native red western cedar seal and hack Can be stained painted surface seated or left natural Measures 44 long by 22 deep by 2f high II 1981 Styling Styling Brush Iron! If they are not claimed by their owners within that time, they join the 1 cages of animals on death row. Animals waiting to die are not all mongrel strays, either. In any given week, well have 10 to 15 thoroughbreds picked up, Barnes says. Many of them end up euthanized because their owners do not pick them up. Pet - owners who let their animals go astray start what Barnes calls a senseless cycle. Cats are better survivors because they can catch small rodents, but dogs must live on garbage. They starve and quickly become public nuisances... biting people, killing sheep, foraging in garbage cans and messing up yards.
