Show Thursday, May 14, 1992 Utah to test drivers for substance abuse Utah and three other states, Nebraska, New Jersey and Minnesota, have been selected by the U.S. Department of Transportations Federal Highway Administration to conduct a one-yepilot program of random roadside testing for alcohol and drug use by commercial motor vehicle drivers. ar Directed by legislation passed in 1991 by the U.S. Congress, the purpose of the study will be to determine the level of drug and alcohol use in the motor carrier industry and to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of an ongoing roadside testing program nationwide. You may even compete against the Governor Norman Bangerter family, who will be the special guest family at this years games. Teams will be comprised of related family members with two different categories. Motor carrier safety officials will randomly select truck drivers at the states ports of entry to be given both breathalyzer and urine tests. UDOT will con- tract with private health-car- e facilities to supervise collection and analyze the samples. UDOT expects to take 42,000 alcohol and 10,500 drug tests during the yearlong study. The Federal Highway Administratin is to submit a report to Congress on the results and findings of the pilot program by April 1994. Ui Games planned On Sept. Labor Day Weekend, Snow College and Ephraim city will be the site of the DARE Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 5 (doubles), tennis (doubles) and swimming (relays). Auxiliary plans annual poppy sale Each year, the American Legion Auxiliary and Girls State inductees distribute little red poppies in towns and cities all over America. The veterans make these little red flowers to help pay for their medical care. Sing of spring Mayor Lou Colosimo will proclaim May 15 and 16 Poppy Days in Price. Auxiliary members will be at the markets and downtown on Friday and at the cemetery all day Saturday. Moina Michael promoted the poppy in 1918 after she read the poem written by Col. John McCrae, We Shall Not Sleep (now know as In Flanders Fields). The first poppies were distributed in New York at the 32nd Division soldiers homecoming from Milwaukee in 1918. Nationwide distribution began in 1921. In 1924, the American Legion turned it solely over to the American Legion Auxiliary. The funds derived from this worthwhile jnnEBfflT" volunteering goes a long way in helping the hospitalized veteran in rehabilitating him and his family. Wearing a poppy is the individuals way of honoring the men who have sacrificed their limbs and lives in this nations service.
