Show Tuesday, August 7, 1990 Sun Advocate, Price, Utah 9A Her friends called Bertha Wilcoxson an amazing lady gha wai called amazing ."The article below waa prepared for publication only daya before Bertha Wilcoxson was killed in an automobile accident on July 20. At her family's request, the Sun Aduo-col- t is printing her story posthumously. By JAN HALLIDAY Staff writer Her friends say she is an amazing person, because at 90 years of age, she still takes care of her housework and bakes bread. She also still gets great pleasure from crocheting and quilting. Bertha Wilcoxson was bom and raised in Vernal, and moved to Price in 1924 with her husband. I feel like a Price native Ive been here so long," she said. Bertha started quilting as a it was a d project at her familys home. She learned the basics from her mother and the ability has grown with each quilt she made. A crib size quilt takes her any where from one to two weeks to finish. This depends on how much quilting there is to do on the pattern, or if she first draws on an embroidery child when year-roun- outline. All her stiching is done by hand, no sewing machine for her. And, Bertha still takes pride in the finished product. Well it makes me feel good to think I can do it," she said. Bertha has never worked outside her home. She enjoyed the years of being a housewife and taking care of her family, Ive done lots of volunteer work," she said, But I never worked for a pay check. I make my quilts for the fun of it, to give away to my family and friends, to the Primary Childrens Hospital, or anyone who needs them." Over the course of the years, Bertha has no idea how many quilts she has made and gave away. Its quite a few though, I can tell you that," she said. With a family of four children, 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild there is quite a demand for her work. She also does crocheting, making afghans, but in days past she enjoyed doing doilies of all shapes and sizes. Now she says her eyes wont cooperat enough to work with the small thread and stiches. Even in the days when she was raising her family, and the housework chores were more demanding, Bertha said she would plan her day so there was time for her pleasures. We didnt look at it as work, she said, We would go from one house to another to quilt and help out our friends and neighbors. Her days are still full, her pleasure has turned into a fulfilling passtime and she has something to work on that keeps her hands busy. She doesnt watch much television, because she says its to hard to keep her eyes on the pattern as she goes around the spots to be quilted with stitches. So most of her daytime entertainment comes from listening to the radio. She enjoys her daughter or grandaughter imagined. Ive never let one get the better of me yet, Bertha said. j Bertha Wilcoxson was called amazing by her friends. At 90, she still kept very busy. wm AMERICAN CAR CARE : CENTERS UfiHERKH UNIROYAL UNIR0YAI iii3Wl Wa 0333330 !h 0 (S Itl $5i D The ultimate year-roun- d tire! In the past, most of her quilts were made from scraps, left over from Bureau releases ' other things she had made. Now she buys her material, with the pattern already on it. She usually gets a cotton fabric that has a design to quilt for the top and a solid piece of flannel fabric for the backing. She likes this type of quilt better for babies than those made from slick material, because the baby doesnt slide around. Bertha never worries about what she will do next. She works on one piece until it is finished and then decides on the next. She does advise the beginning quilter not to do a great many details, because to much quilting packs the batting down causing the quilt to be stiff, not soft and fluffy. She said if she were to teach someone how to quilt she would begin by showing them how to set up the quilting frame and get the quilt on.
