Dr. David R. Harris, clinical professor of dermatology at Stanford University Medical Center, says a technique known as dermabrasion can permanently smooth out the scars of the widespread skin disease. Just being able to treat acne is not enough, says Harris. We see cases all the time where we eliminate the acne seemingly overnight but still leave scars behind. Dermabrasion involves the use of F-1- 50 8093 (& percent for most people, Harris says. But he adds that the technique generally cant be performed until the acne is under control, so those with persisting acne arent good candidates. lie also warns that persons with dark skin occasionally are prone to growing back even darker skin after the procedures, so dermatologists generally sand a test site behind the ear or at the hairline to see if the person is prone to discoloration. If so, he says, excess pigmentation can be counteracted with a skin lightener. 70 Techniques and effectiveness of the procedure have been continually improved since dermabrasion was developed by a dermatologist in the 1940s. The same technique, he says, can also be used effectively for sun damaged skin and wrinkle lines. Screening is defense for prostate cancer While new high technology tests are available for patients urologist. Dr. Thomas A. Stanley, professor of surgery and head of urology at Stanford, says all men over age 50 should have a careful rectal exam to check for signs of prostate cancer. It would be far too expensive and cause too much anxiety for all men over 50 to have PSA and ultrasound if the prostate feels normal on rectal examination, Stamey explains. If prostate cancer is discovered early, the chances of providing effective treatment are excellent, he notes. Cancer of the prostate, the walnut-sizegland that produces the fluid components of semen, is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men. Approximately 90,000 men in the United States are diagd nosed with the disease annually. Use a label to i.d. film Unidentified rolls of undeveloped film are found in the mail every day by postal workers, but this doesnt necessarily have to happen, according to Helper postmaster Walt Borla. The problem occurs when rolls of film mailed to processing companies pop out of the container or envelope provided for mailing. Many of these film mailers, offered to customers for mailing without postage, are made of thin, inexpensive paper. It is not unusual for the envelope flap to pop open or for the irregular sized film canister to cause a tear in the envelope. When roles of film are lost in the mail they usually have nothing on them to hel p post al workers identify the owner. An easy way to eliminate the possibility of losing film in the mail is to attach a return address sticker to each roll of film prior to putting it into the mailing envelope. Always use a return adress on the mailing envelope provided by the processing company. Unidentified film that docs not have a return address attached is stored for 30 days in the post office and if unclaimed, it is thrown away. ' |
