brief history of his busy life lorenzo snow the venerable head of the mormon church d ed suddenly thursday afternoon october 10 at h s residence the bee hive house in salt lake his death was directly due to bronchitis caused by a cold and was a great surprise to the general public who were not aware of the illness of the president serious or otherwise until he was on the threshold of death tor some time the pres dent had been in feeble health owing to advancing years and those near him realized his growing feebleness but they did not realize that the end was so near they insisted ho vever tint the best ble care of his health be taken and for tins reason he did not apper at the late bonfe ence save at the bunday after noon session when apostle clawson was elevated to the first presidency the exertion caused by this to him great effort had a depressing effect and monday he was not so well but rallied tuesday and beamed no worse than he bad been for some time the illness which terminated fatally began about a month ago when dent snow attended a social function where he caught a severe cold A hacking cough followed the cold and although everything known to science coupled with th best of care was done no relief was afforded it was not until wednesday morning that anything like a serious derange ment was even suspected by those around him when he was attacked by vomiting spells which kept up almost incessantly for some time and he was was appointed counselor to parley P pratt president of tl e british mission in 1841 he published a pa nophlet the only way to be saved which has been translated into german french and italian in 1843 he returned to america at the head of converts on a specially chartered vessel in 1844 he conducted a v dorous campaign in ohio for joseph smith for president ot the united states in 1845 turning to education he was placed at the head of the nauvoo grammar school he left nauvoo in the exodus of 1846 for salt Lake Jut on account of sickness did not reach there until 1848 in october 1849 he was sent on a mission to italy where he remained for three years and translated the book of mon in 1852 he was elected a mem her of the utah house of Ee presenta tives in accordance with the law of 1850 he was returned to every ses until 1882 three t mes to the house and twenty three to the council in 1855 with fifty families he founded and named bangham city which was h shome until he became president of the church in 1864 he went on a m assion to the sandwich islands and labored dil gently fora time in that part of the pacific in 1872 he accompanied george A balth and other utah people on a tour of the countries of europe and palestine in 1877 he was released as president of boxelder Box elder stake after having pro stated HIS EVENTFUL CAREER lorenzo snow fifth president of the mormon chuich was born at mantua portage co ohio april 3 1814 at twenty one he entered oberlin college to secure a class cal education in 1836 he became a convert to mormonism and was baptized baptised sed by elder john S boynton in 1837 he began the active ministerial career continued through out his busy life in may 1840 he took his first mission to europe and terms of six months each but later re leased on a writ of habeas corpus on april 1889 he became the president of the quorum of the twelve apostles which position he retained until sep 13 1898 wl en he became the pres dent of the chucci and chaee as is counselors george Q cainnon and joseph F smith president banow during bis life was the husband of n ne wives whom
