Frank Segura, quite literally, learned the ropes a mere five years ago and he beat cowboys at the competition who grew up on the range. But learning to rope late in life By LIZ FAULKNER Staff writer Nice guys always finish last, so the saying goes. Well, Frank Ponch Segura proved that nice guys can finish first, they just have to try harder. Ponch proved it recently when he captured first place at the Utah Team State hasnt been the only obstacle that Frank has had to overcome. Frank also suffers from acute colon cancer. Frank underwent severe colon surgery last June and has since been receiving constant chemotherapy through a special box that he keeps on his belt, much like a small beeper. The machine is surgically attached to his colon by means Roping Championship. He walked away a winner in more ways than one. If it wasnt for this, he said, pointing to the extraordinary machine, Id be in the hop-sita- l. Franks tanned face belies any traces of the illness and his attitude is nothing but positive. It just makes me try that much harder and be that much more positive in everything that Ido. Im just so thankful to the good Lord for every day that I have, that I can get up and go. And Im thankful that were whippin it, Frank said, wiping the sweat from his brow. He had just finished roping some cows. Frank practices every day for hours at a time. If Im not practicing ropin, Im shoveling manure, he and af- fectionately pats his horse appropriately named Lucky. Luck seems to play a large role in Frank Seguras life. Im a lucky guy. Im lucky that I won the ropin championship. And most of all, Im lucky that Im winning against this, he said. So far the cancerous tumor has been reduced by 50 percent. Doctors are amazed at the progress and friends said that Frank never let it get him down. He never let it get to him. Hes really an awfully special man, said Barbara Lott who shares a love of horses with Frank. When I found out that he had cancer, I just didnt know what to say to him. I just wanted to go up to him and hug him and tell him itll be okay, but you just cant do that, you know, Barbara said. Barbara has been a barrel racer for more than 15 years and has known Frank for the last five years. Ive only known him for a short time, but I feel like Ive known him all of my life, Barbara said. He makes you feel that way because hes always so friendly to everyone. Hes always there to help you if you need it and wish you luck at the competitions, even those competing against him. Even when he wasnt well enough to rope, hed be right there watching. It wasnt long before he was back on his horse, she said. Barbara remembered a time when Frank wasnt so well but it didnt stop his antics. Ponch was in the hospital in Provo after his surgery. My sister-in-laworks there but she didnt know who he was. One day she was passing by and she saw him waving his arms in the air all over the place. w . 3y,;,t .5 s Photos by Lit Faulkner high point winner at the Utah State Team Roping Championship several weeks ago. I guess he looked pretty silly because they couldnt stop laughing. But thats Ponch. He never gives up, not even for this. I know hell win. Hes got courage, Barbara added. Having always led an active life, Frank shrugs off his many accompishments in his usual modest way. I played golf for about 20 years, but I could never get my picture in the paper so I thought Id take up team roping. Actually, I kind of slipped into it. I always loved horses. Both of my folks came off ranches and I used to spend summer vacations on the ranches and got to foolin around some but I never had a horse. Then one day, actually I was working, a friend of mine showed me this baby horse. Well, I fell in love with him and bought him, Frank said. He clucked to the now fully grown and powerfully-buil- t, spotted stallion. The horse loyally trailed behind him much as a puppy follows its master: Frank said he then just started roping and eventually began competing locally. As a member of the Sheriffs Posse and the Utah State 4t - " r,- She had no idea Western Riding Club Association, Frank took first place in the ribbon pull event with his partner Reid Wilson twice, once in 1984 and again in 1986. was more suprised than Frank when he recently took first place at the state team roping contest. Only about 50 percent of ropers train their own horses but Frank said he enjoys training them and feels that the horse learns more from its owner. His horse, Lucky, is now seven and Frank said hes still learning. The competition is also really fun.
