With a program at the Price City Pool, it is possible for youngsters to learn to swim before they can walk. The Parent and Tot program brings babies and parents into the water together where the young people are able to learn to swim and take care of themselves should they ever accidently fall or be pushed into deep water, according to Phyllis Cox, instructor. Cox said there are two ways to teach youngsters to swim. The first is by literally dunking them in the water. She said this method is often ineffective as they learn to hate the water. The second way is to slowly teach them to love the water. This is the method that is used with the children at the Price pool, she said. She said that new-bor- n babies from to about Parent-To- t have a natural ability to hold their breath. Parents are tought to blow into the face of the child. This causes the child to inhale and hold his or her breath while he or she goes under water. Basically, the infants are taught to swim with the same motions that they use when crawling, Cox said. Cox said she likes having the parents on hand as the child follows direction better from mom and dad and is able to understand more about what is happening. There is no age restrictions on the program which lasts seven lessons. She said the mother usually comes but has had several fathers along for the lesson also. Usually there are four to eight children in each class along with the parents. Grace Johnson coaxes Gavin, 21 months, into the water. Adrianne Bryant, 18 months, watches the ceiling while supported by her mother, Sheryl. Nikki Semken, 2, swims with her grandmother, Byllee Semken. umimmihiijwmW!' ins r- Jl) ' - --' Ml"1 " IIIIUW '''- - " " iununi'nii ' m wu k - t. -- s ISSllltlllilii; '-- iC 'i . 5.
