No matter where you are, or what time of day it is, if you live in Magna you are covered by a blanket of protection that not only insures your safety and well being, but sometimes your yery life. What is this magic coverage that oilers the community such peace of mind? It is a group of dedicated, well trained paramedics and emergency medical technicians who respond to every medical call as well as every fire alarm. All are seasoned veterans who have been on call for at least 15 years, with good bedside manners and a high level of empathy for someone in trouble. They also have a lot of pride in what they do, which is reflected in the way they maintain the grounds and equipment at the Magna Fire Station while they are between calls. Most people dont realize that the paramedics are first hired on as fire fighters, and then sent to school to be trained as paramedics. If there is a fire, the whole station joins in fighting the blaze. When it is a structure fire with people involved, the fireman protect the medical crew as they rescue the fire victims. The EMTs take a 150 hour course taught at the University of Utah and other places throughout the area in basic life support, while the paramedics are involved in a two year program at Weber State where they get an associate degree in emergency medicine. when the fire However, department sends them for paramedic training they dont stay for the entire two years, because the program is shortened by deleting the general education classes such as math and English, and concentrating on the medical aspects of the instruction. They also spend two or three months at Weber in didactic (book work) training, as well as two or three months in the emergency and operating rooms training with staff and physicians. In addition they ride v.ith the trained after paramedics, completion of their course, and under their tutelage and watchful eye they apply what they have learned from the books and practical experience. a state sanctioned Only paramedic can do an endotrachial which involves intubation, putting a tube down through the throat into the lungs to breathe for a person who cannot do it on his own. They are also the only authorized personnel who can administer one of between 25 or SO iniravanous heart medications to heart patients. A systems allows them to call difference hospitals to talk to the emergency room physician, and they can also send an EKG directly through the telemetry system so that the heart can be monitored by the hospital staff. Although the EMTs knowledge is not quite as broad as the paramedics, some of them - but not all are defibrillator qualified -- - a machine that starts to operate EMTs in rural situations who are authorized to administer IVs with 5 dextrose percent intraveneously, and Magna is one of the few places in the valley that has EMTs trained to do this and accidents on account of road conditions. There A cardiac arrest is when the are two always heart and paramedics on duty 24 hours a stops beating, fibrillation is when there is a day, because it take two to man a heart problem that sets up a rescue rig. The men machine is designed to shock the work shifts, living at the heart back into its normal fire station as though it was their home and work 56 hours a week pumping action. In addition, there are some on a nine day rotation. Since the paramedics and the mcdijal technicians are on call from the Tooele County line on the west, to the Davis County line on the north, the response time in the outlying districts could be from 10 to 12 minutes. However, within the Magna area the response time is litween 1 12 to 3 minutes, which is a pretty comforting thing to know when you happen to be on the trouble end of the spectrum. The types of calls that are answered by the paramedics, the EMTs and the firemen, vary from season to season. The worst fires are in the winter when something goes wrong with the furnace. Grass and tree fires are more common in summer. As far as medical calls are concerned, the highest number of calls come in during the summer and are related to recreational accidents such as boating, motorcycles, bicycles and drown24-ho- HELLO, BERNINA GOODBYE, FRUSTRATION!
