Show IB THfc THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, June 16, 1988 ARTS Follies Is A Hit For City Rep by Olga Milius Green Sheet Theater Critic SALT LAKE. The City Rep concert version of Stephen Sondheims Follies was well accepted by the opening night audience who found the blend of music and laughter much to their liking, Skipping the overture, the show began with Duane Stephens opening dialogue, in which he reminisced and commented the theater would soon be torn down to make way for a parking lot. So realistic was the comment that during intermission and following the show, City Rep president Tom Parker found patrons, including season ticket holders, asking him why the companys new home was shortly to be torn down. Fear not, City Rep lovers, the company has no intention of giving up its new home at the Utah Theater. The dialogue is strictly part of the introduction to Follies. i music that continued after the bows were taken. The show deals with the memories of former Follies girls and the men in their lives and Joanne Parkers direction brought out the blend of humor and pathos, even though the dialogue was not used. A favorite with the audience was the catchy "Listen To The Rain" performed by Joanne Taylor and James Dale. Bryon Finch and the company gave the theme song, "Beautiful Girls" style and some excellent freezes added to the number. Randy Hickman was an audience favorite with an energetic Blues" and an exuberant "The Right Girl." Jared Shaver, Jennifer OHaley, Finch and Heather Young were a hit with "All Things Bright and Beautiful." Shirley Pryor received a big hand for her "Broadway Baby." The program indicated that number to include five of the cast but it was Railed Sondheims score is lively and many of the songs were new to the audience. The City Rep orchestra under the direction of Richard Chatelain did it justice, enough so that quite a few members of the audience stayed in their seats to listen to the same presented as a solo. That "Whos women, Also well received was "Too Many Mornings with Stephens and Donna Wellman and Finchs m "Could I Leave You. There were a couple of glitches as singers missed a line or cue, but this was opening night and anyway it wasnt enough to spoil a good show. For an enjoyable evening, Follies is a good bet.
