Show 2 Thursday, April THE GREEN SHEET 7, 1988 That Incident At Union Middle School is Profoundly-Disturbin- g The incident that occurred at Union middle school is profoundly disturbing for a couple of reasons. That an adult a substitute teacher "mop up the floor" with a student, no Amatter how provocative the students behavior, certainly is offensive and a cause for great concern. Jordan School District had no choice but to remove the teacher from its role of eligible substitutes. It is required of adults in the teaching profession that they remain in control of their emotions. While this is becoming increasingly difficult given the scope of behavioral problems they face. Those who are unable to do so cannot be allowed to continue in the profession. Administrators, too, bear the burden of creating an environment where discipline is effective. The students behavior and the alleged reaction of some of his schoolmates are also distressing. In a civilized society, urinating in a classroom is unacceptable. But according to some faculty members at Union middle school, the student was actually greeted as a hero by his classmates following published reports of the incident that surfaced the following week. At least one report said the incident stemmed from "a dare." Having observed the attitude of some teenagers, it is a scenario that is easily believed. They are a minority, but they are tak- -- Dallas OUR READERS WRITE Enjoyed April Fool Dear Editor: I thoroughly enjoyed your April Fools articles. Apparently, someone on your staff has a greater imagination than myself. Personally, I thought the MurrayMidvale merger made some sense. My only objection to the story was EDITORIAL - ing an increasing toll on the educational pro- that of selecting Wendell Coombs over Merril Ross cess of the majority. Obviously there are conflicting stories about what really happened. Superintendent Raymond Whittenburg, who has heard both sides of the story and no doubt took input from others at the school, has indicated that while the appropriate discipline has been taken against the teacher, the student will for his part in the incinot get off scot-fre- e dent. Indeed, he should not. Those other students who were involved if there was a dare, and those who saw something heroic in the youths actions, ought to take a good look at their own value system. Greeting a young man as a hero in such an incident seems to indicate those values might be sadly misplaced. Educators face an increasingly difficult task in maintaining effective disciplinary measures. Too often parents are not effective in their support of the system. They cannot control their children and neither can the school. Let us hope that this incident is isolated and is not an indication of the way things are headed in Utah schools. Perhaps this is a reflection on the "class size" message educators have been pepperi- ng us with. The First Decade How Did It Survive That Long? Dallas, the -- - First "Sheeze," I said to my friend Grenelda P. Pickenheimer, "Have we been hooked on that garbage for a whole decade?" "Youre hooked, I'm just along for the ride," she said. Well, whatever. I can count on one hand the. number of episodes we have missed in that time frame thanks in no small part to the invention of the video cassette recorder. And one of those misses was because I somehow failed to set it properly. Why weve watched Dallas (and Falconcrest ) in some of the finest (and sleaziest) motels in America, those in Wendover, Reno, Anaheim, who knows where else during those 10 years. Of course like most people our vacations usually occur in the summer and one thing weve not stooped to is or that list watching would be infinitely longer. You may notice that this column has never, not even once, poked fun at women who watch Soaps in the daytime. who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones. "Sooo, Grenelda, how would you like to take a little Dallas trivia test?" I asked later, finding just that in Fridays newspaper. She was game. After all, we figured we were experts. Well, neither one of us could score a perfect 10. The questions rang a faint bell, but keeping track of all the trash that has occurred over the years was beyond both of us. For example, I failed on the very first question. Who in addition to Priscilla Presley have played Jenna Wade? I honestly didnt know anyone else had. I do not remember the character prior to Presleys advent. The answer was Morgan Fairchild and Frandne Tacker. The next question was a mite easier. Who were the prime suspects in the shooting of J. R. in assignment (just kidding, John). I would bke to see your newspaper devote a section to say, "viscious rumors", and carry on with this light hearted type dialogue. Its great reading and speaking as a government consultant, "I truly appreciate the opportunity to laugh a little about politics." Moreover, have you ever considered preparing business portraits on locals. I think such would in the long run enhance your advertising budget. You have a good newspaper and one of the best reporters anywhere (Bob Mickelson). But, what the heck, a need exists to get to our apathetic society and creating a little controversy is the best way I know to garner ones interests. By he way, I think I will suggest the need for "dust busters" in the next environmental impact statement that I write. the Editor: It seems that the key to in Congress is to talk about fiscal conservatism, the deficit, and budgetary restraint. After all, this is the rhetoric Wayne Owens sends to his Utah constituents. Ibe House Democrats have revealed their true intent; their interest is in spending lots of money. Take for example, the $5.5 billion dollar welfare reform package presented by the democrats that is heavy on welfare and light on reform because it strips the states of options. Wayne Owens was one of the 230 members who voted for this expensive, yet ineffective attempt at reform. .. The issue here is the fact that the welfare system should reflect and reinforce societys basic values. If we expect men and women to work, be and to care for their children, the welfare system should reinforce such behavior. Utah and 22 other states have programs that require recipients to earn their benefits. These states have proven that they can do the mob of work-for-welfa- re . Editor Most things are difficult to predict, but some things are easy. One easy thing to predict is the failure of Ariass peace plan for Nicaragua. No Communist government has allowed itself to be voted out of power. What then is the purpost of the parties agreeing to negotiate? For the Communists it is to trick Americans into witholding aid from the Contras. One who is falling for this is 2nd Congressional District Congressman Wayne Owens. The Contras are involved in the peace plan to satisfy critics demands for a peaceful resolution. The significance of having a Communist government in Central America is only a little more difficult to predict. If the press is to be believed, the introduction of Communism into Cuba led to the closest the world has come to a nuclear war. Later Castro emptied his jails during the Cuban boat lift. These criminals will continue to plague the U.S. indefinitely. The spread of Communism in Central America and Mexico would threaten our southern border and result in a flood of refugees that would permanently psoe serious economic and social problems. America has a rare opportunity to help a democratic resistance to a Communist dictatorship simply by providing aid tohe Contras, provided representatives like Wayne Owens dont blow it. work-for-welfa- re able-bodie- the summer of 1980 (has been it really that long?).
