"The role of women has changed considerably and the girls are very much aware of it," she remarked. "They read about damsels in distress and how men had to take care of women and it just isnt that way any more. Girls feel they are every bit as capable as boys." The difference shows in some of the activities students participate in,, she said. Tying the historical unit in with the annual Valentine Day celebration, the boys each draw a girls name, and boys and girls wear a heart on their sleeve the week before Valentines Day, bearing the name of their partner. Boys are expected to go out of their way to be chivalrous and polite to the girls, canying their lunch trays or t)ooks, opening doors, and sharpening pencils. Boys and girls exchange small gifts during the week, such things as heart shaped balloons, candy or cards. The week climaxed with a dance and a gift exchange of cakes and mosaics. As students continue in the middle ages unit, boys design and make their own shields, said the teacher. Some of the girls also choose to make shields, she noted, another sign of the times. Towards the end of the unit, the activities for a boys select tournament. In years past, tournaments have included chess competitions and bicycle races through an obstacle course. Girls may also develop a tournament if they wish, she noted, and some classes do so, some do not. Teachers involved with the project are Kaye Anderson, Dwaine Jackson and Pat Tucker.
