pres dent lorenzo snow and for many years a consa chous figure in the corn mercial financial an 1 pol affairs of utah d ed at monterey california at an early hour friday morning april I 1 12 the end came peacefully at 1 30 a he was seized with sinking spell his family pi an dr clift was with hini but strong stimulants failed to revive h and he fell into a deep sleep which half an hour later ended in death there u no suffering during the last hours of his life and he was con until he fell into the sleep from which he never wakened the body ws taken to san francis where it was prepared for shipment to salt lake u dent cannons death was not unexpected tor months he has been in ill health and foi a month his con has been cr t cat dr clift his physic an in ing of the cause of apostle cannon s death said apostle death was due to Bione hit s and enlargement of the heart the latter being bv coughing he was also in a very weak state and really was not far from nervous prostration he has been lingering in about the same state for two weeks but since his last attack he has never had a chance of le covery ohp very end when he dropped off to cleeo he was conscious the news did not reach salt lake until 60 clock in the morning as the telegraph offices at monterey were closed the news came to angus M cannon in a from john Q cannon as follows father left us this morning at 1 20 death came peacefully please join with family in consulting about fun eral in an hour the news had spread from one end of the city to the other and on upper main street where the church institutions are located there was a veritable profus on of half masted george quayle biographical cannon was born on january 11 1827 in liverpool england his parents were george cannon and ann quayle and were natives ol 01 the Is e ot man ahe cannon or cannan family early records show that the name was spelled the latter way at one time came originally the borders 0 england and scotland but fled to the isle of man tor refuge on account ol 01 pol or religious troubles and the name of the place to which they went and which Is still in the family was called gah choll in the manx language means hiding place george quayle cannon was the oldest of his father s family and he in connection with other members ot his family became converts to the mormon faith in liverpool where they were baptized june 18 1840 by bluer john taylor who afterward became president of the mon church coming to america in august 1844 mr can non entered the employ of mr taylor who was the ed tor of times and ses ions and the nau neighbor prom that date until october 1849 he was a member of john taylor a and was ordained an elder by president taylor february 9 and a few days later became a seventy when the mormons were driven out of nau in 1846 pre ident cannon then a boy of 19 went out with the main body to winter he next year he crossed the plains and arrived in salt la te october 3 1847 being one of the pioneers two years later he was called to cal fornia on a miss on tor his church and e there was selected with others to go on a mission to the banda ich 1 lands and landed in honolulu on the 1 th of december 1850 president cannon remained in the sandwich islands tor three and a h it years and in that time Is to have made over 4 converts mostly natives in this work president cannon the years and 1800 and was also the emi gr ion agent tor the church in that territory during that time e on this mission in october 1869 he was chosen a apostle to fill the vacancy made by the death of parley P pratt and on his re turn home ten months later was ordained to that office this was aug 26 when he was but sa years 0 ae he had been an apos ie therefore or forty one years last august boon after bis ordination president cannon was ordered upon a mission to great britain and reached liverpool before the year was out but before be left salt lal e he established the church printing office in this city on his return in kiy ab he was sent to washington with hon wl hooper the two having been chosen united states senators when the attempt was made to have utah admitted as a state he was then but 5 years of age after congress adjourned in july president cannon returned to europe and pre aided over the mis slon there tl 1 the autumn of 1804 his journey home over the p a ns that year was filled with the gravest peril bebau e of the ind an wars that were rw b t the trip was made in safety and president cannon s mission work was ended he having spent fourteen of the alt teen preceded ng years in the mission held in the winter of 1884 5 president cannon or the first sunday school in salt lake and in january of the next year he established the juvenile instructor to which journal he contributed the fro ts of his pen for many years in he was made general of th deseret sunday school union a position he continued to hold till the end in that same u president cannon was appold ed by brinham young to take charge of the deseret news that was then pub lashed as a weekly and semi weekly while in charge of the publication he established the deseret evening news and conducted it till success was assured later he in company with briham young jr conducted the pub tor a time this w s in 1877 he also wrote what Is considered by the mormon peo PRESIDENT GEORGE Q CANNON flags this murk of respect power corn pany crepe was in evidence for half a block down main street from the news office every door bearing its knot of white and black president cannon left salt lake for california march 13 in hopes of re gaining his health lie had been ail ing since his return from honolulu several months since about the farst of march he had an attack of grip which left him much enfeebled and he lett for the coast as soon as he was able to travel his condition showed much improve ment for a few days but this was fol lowed by a ne chich terminated in death his dem se was hourly ex pecked for several days yet it never produced a shock wherever he was known in high church circles his loss is deeply deplored around all the church offices there was a funeral air lor nearly the en tire afternoon president snow was closeted with prom nent members of the church and other visitors and when he went to his private res dence at 4 clock he gave orders that he r as not to bo disturbed as he did not care to d the sad event in his present elate of mind it was said by a mem ber of the family however that the president has taken the death of one of his annc pal advisers very much to heart and regrets probably more than anyone els eouts de of the family of president cannon the latter s call to another sphere apostle lund in commenting on the event said to speak of george Q cannon is to talk of the h story of the church and that is a rather exhaustive subject borne men longer than others and do much less it a man u ll feito be measured by the work he has djoe tt en it must be sa d that georget cannon was a methuselah 1 hat he will be missed as a strong man n the coonc Is and conduct of the church there cannot be any doubt pie to be he standard history of joseph boltl and some other associated with the founding 0 the Z I 1 and was one ot the original board of director sj he was a director 0 the union pa railroad and was connected with a number 0 banks in this city as veil as other mercantile alons many 0 which he helped to establish in mr cannon was elected delegate to eon giess serving in that capacity until 1881 when he was elc eded because he was a poleg arnast brigham young died in 1877 and by his will president cannon brigham young jr and albert Carrl neton were made executors ot that document the estate was much because of the ure number of heirs in 1873 suit was brought by u 0 the dissatisfied ones ana judge J boreman who was then on the terri ial bench issued an order that the bonds of the executors be increased ahey refused to furst ah the increased bond and were sent to he aa tor contempt ot court A lew weeks later chief justice hunter sue took the lead be was the first to learn the ha wallan language and liter translated the chooh ct mormon into he returned to cal ornia in 1854 and tor a time assisted apos t e parley P pratt on hia autobiography and then came on to salt lake on hia arrival he was made one of the presidents ot the thirtieth quorum of seventies and soon afterwards was ordered to prepare lor a second mission to the bandrich band blands but beto e president cannon started on this mission he was called to ca tornia to assist in the pub learlon of a paper there he departed from bait lal e in a 18 and upon bla arri val in lal cornu was chosen to have charge ot the mission work in that state fend oraon ahls work he performed in connection with the cation ot the western standard the church paper ol 01 the coast and the publication 0 the book ol 01 mormon in the hawaiian lan guage when news was received that johnson s army was moving toward utah president cannon started at once for home and arr ved in salt lake in january 1808 he was at once made adjutant general 0 the amy being organized bv brigham young to resist invasion and soon after was sent to 11 more utah to publish the deseret news when salt lake wab aban boned he kept at this 1 september 1808 when he was sent upon a ml slon easte n states the call re u when he was on his hayato salt lake and in three quarters ol 01 an hour he was to start the wo k in the astern field was of a very delicate nature requiring the highest type ot d u the extreme bitterness that existed among the people the mons on account of polygamy bv mens ot letters of introduction governor ah fia L president cannon succeeded in reach ing many men high la authority and 1 n layl ig before them the true state of attars in utah he had charge ot the ea tern mis ion duri tig abed judge acreman and he released the pris boners administer n was then continued until the work was past ed over to the brigham ipoung trust company when apostle jonn laylor was ele ted p s ident ot the church in 1880 george Q cannon and joseph F smith were made his counselors and although the first pre w as suase reorganized twi e in when d ed and in 1898 when president woodruff died president cannon and joseph smith continued to be the president 8 coun delors through all the changes president cannon leaves a family consisting 0 five wives and twenty seven children forta one grand children and one great grand child elizabeth H cannon by whom hs had eleven achl dren d ed in 1 in bait lake city seven of the children born of this un on are also dead and these are all the deaths hat have occurred la the family |
