Show 6B THE GREEN SHEET 2, 1987 Thursday, July Joe Friday Makes Comeback In Hysterical 'Dragnet' as our duo head off to nail down a case involving the theft of an entire run of girlie magazines published by soft core porno king Jerry Caesar (Dabney Coleman). Also involved are the overtly ambitious Reverend Plummer) Whirley (Christopher and Alexandra Paul as a woman by Mark Cartwright Green Sheet Entertainment Critic SEEN THE SCREEN DEPT.: Los Angeles, ON is the city, This California. Do you remember those words spoken by Sergeant Joe Friday every week on televisions popular police show Dragnet! Well, you can hear them again because Dragnet is now a motion picture from Universal and, thanks fo a script by Dan Aykroyd, Alan Zweibel and Tom Mankiewicz, directed by Mankiewicz, this Dragnet is hysterically funny while still able to maintain the values that made Jack Webbs TV show so popular. Aykroyd is Detective Sergeant Joe Friday, Namesake nephew of Webbs character, on the L.A.P.D. His partner is Pep Streebeck (Tom Hanks), who is mellow unconventional and a perfect foil for Friday who. just like his uncle, can quote the law chapter and verse, even the obscure ones. What happened to his uncles partner, Bill Gannon? Oh, he's put in so many years on the force that they kicked him upstairs to the rank of captain. Harry .Morgan reprises his role from the television series. It s obvious that Aykroyd was a Dragnet fan as a kid, since he not only wears the same Joe Friday hairstyle, but has all the mannerisms. voice patterns, etc. that Jack Webb popularized. At times you actually start to think it is Webb in this very, very funny send-up- . Tom Hanks turns in his best performance since Nothing In Common watering hole. Jackie could, at times, be a contradiction in terms. Not only was he a consummate comedian, writer, composer and conductor (who couldnt read music), but Jackie could sit for hours discussing the entertainment business, politics, national news items and the good old days of vaudeville, which was before my time. AS WE SEE IT who has fallen for Friday while he and his partner run all over after a group known as P.A.G.A.N.s (People Against Goodness And ). Left in the hands of less talented people, this film would have fallen on its face, but Aykroyd. Hanks, Morgan, Plummer, Coleman and Paul manage to keep the audience laughing, which makes Dragnet worth the price of admission. It's been a good season for comedies with Beverly Hills Cop 2, Spaceballs and now Dragnet. PERSONAL NOTE DEPT.: Last week Jackie Gleason died and with his death we rfot only lost a comedic genius, we also lost Reginald Von Gleason The Third. Joe The Bartender, The Poor Soul and Ralph Kramden. Jackie was comedy personified, a man who entertained the world and a man who had style. Having lived in New York (that's how you spell it, Hal 1 had the opportunity to run into The Great One on four separate occasions at Toots Shores, his favorite ) From the first time we were introduced by Broadway columnist Earl Wilson and Toots Shor, he called me Mark only once and after that it was "pal which was his pet name for everyone. Aside from his classic Ralph Kramden role and the American Scene Magazine with the June Taylor Dancers and orchestra leader Sammy Spear, Jackie made motion pictures which will live on long after the rest of us are gone. In my opinion his most outstanding films were The Hustler with Paul Newman in 1961, Gigot 1962, Soldier in the Rain with Steve McQueen and Poppa 's Delicate Condition, both in 1963, and his feature film, Nothing In Common with Tom Hanks iri 1986. He was large and he lived large and while the more pious might have in booze and felt he women, it should be noted that he was a devout Catholic never finding it necessary to wear his heart on his sleeve. He was a task master when the situation called for it, but I have over-indulge- d never heard anyone over the years speak of him in anything but glowing terms. The tears have been shed and the final toast made to the man who showed us all How sweet it is. All thats left is to borrow one of Jackies lines from Soldier in the Rain and say, Until that time, Jackie, until that time so long, pal. ON THE VIDEO SCENE DEPT.: Seems that almost everyone is celebrating either an anniversary or a birthday on video this month. Its the tenth birthday for Star Wars. Thats right, 10 years ago the force arrived and in horror of the saga, the price has been dropped. James Bond celebrates his 25th anniversary as a film hero and in honor of this event, CBSFox Video has reduced the price on all 14 of the Bond films from the original $79.98 to $19.98 ( Casino Royale, and the awful Bond spoof and Never Say Never Again which was from Warner Brothers, are not included in the package of 14). Could it be? Is Superman, the man of steel, really 50? Yep. And Warner Home Video is releasing Serial, the 1948 Superman:The serial which starred Kirk Alyn and had 15 chapters and Superman and the Mole Men starring George Reeves, the television Man of Steel at $59.95 per copy. Christopher Reeves Superman, Superman 2 and 3 will be reduced to $24.98 per copy. Elvis fans can go cfazy as Love Me Tender, King Creole, G.I. Blues, Flaming Star, Wild in the Country, Girls! Girls! Girls!, Fun in Acapulco, Paradise Hawaiian Style and Roustabout all go on permanent discount at $19.98 each from Key HOME If action and adventure is what Wanted you want, I highly suggest Dead Or Alive, starring Rutger Hauer as Nick Randall, great great Mcgrandson to Josh Randall (Steve the show TV by the from Queen same name). Hes out after terrorists in a really dynamite video from New World Video. I ve Judging by the vido retailers Video. DRAGNET ... Joe Friday (Dan Aykroyd) and Streebek (Tom Hanks) are assigned to investigate the Pagan robberies and go undercover to follow up a lead. 'San Juan Outpost' SPECIAL OCCASION COMING UP? First written and produced some 30 years ago by Ruth and Nathan Hales, the play tells the story of the Mormon pioneers sent to the San Juan with the mission of making friends with the Indians. Not only did they have to cope with the Indians, but also with a group of Texans determined to take over the range land. The play is not factual, although some of the characters are based on real people. The addition of music doesn't always work with plays, but in this case, it does. Sally Dietlein has written a complete score that epitomizes the American West. Its that kind of music. Other songs include two delightful numbers by the children, played on Wednesday night by Melanie Keefer as Jenny, Jessica Dietlein as Tilly and Quinn Dietlein as Ephraim. The three were a joy throughout the show, with the Keefer girl turning in an especially good performance. A standout characterization was that of Richard Wilkins as Dartmouth, the villain of the piece. The audience showed its appreciation with a chorus of hearty boos as he took his curtain call. Wilkins is one of the Hale Theaters most popular actors, and deservedly so. Always favorites, Ruth and Nathan Hale both appear in this production as the feisty Aunt Em and Uncle Herb. Jared Shaver and Mark Dietlein are sharing the role of Parley. Shaver handled the part Wednesday and turned in an excellent performance as the young Texan. Deanna Walker gave us a lovely Caroline, Spencer Anderson was effective as Dartmouths sidekick, Higgley, Linda Herzog offered a sympathetic Elvira and Kurt Jackson rounded out the cast as Navaho Frank. Singing and dancing their way through the production were Melinda Ness. Jennifer Wolf, Ann Madsen, Judy Cook, Tami McCann, Jim Smith, Will Swenson, Bob Bedore, Todd Russell, Herman Frasier, Bart Mody and John Lesko. The sound effects are worthy of mention.
