Mrs. Bangerter announced plans to send out a monthly newsletter to parents throughout the state suggesting ways to enhance a childs education. The newsletter will outline ways that parents can help their children become more successful in school. Parents can reinforce what children learn at school and at the same time provide a climate in the home conducive to learning. There are many ways parents can help their children using items in the home, stated Utahs First Lady. Im beginning this program because Im committed to the idea . that parents are the primary educators of their children. Education is so important that I want to provide suggestions which will help parents and grandparents enjoy being together. As parents of students in Utah, we are all concerned that our children receive the very best education possible, noted the first such newsletter. Although our educators and school administrators do an excellent job, in order for children to gain the most from educational opportunities, parents and other family members must become personally involved in every aspect of learning. In addition to becoming involved in specific programs such as volunteer groups or PTA organizations, parents can do many things to aid and teach their children. Mrs. Bangerter continued: I am confident that working together to parent - sharing concerns and ideas, we can be significant positive influences in the educational development of our children. The summer recess will allow parents and children to spend more time together. With proper attention, vacations and other summer activities can be very meaningful learning experiences. Several suggestions were given, including: Control the TV ; dont let it control you! Summer gives children the opportunity to watch more television. Decide in advance which programs youll watch. Encourage careful selections and limit total viewing time. 3 however, where a subdivision street is intended to continue into adjacent property lo comply with the requirements of Section a temporary may be established under the following conditions: (a) If no residential lots use c the temporary street for access, the street may be of any length and need not have a turn around at its end, lb) If said stub street is in excess of one hundred feet in length, one lot at the end of said street must be temporart- - Encourage questions that promote learning. Keep an atlas, globe or map near the TV, so children can look up the locations of places they hear about on programs or the news. Think of ways to foster inquisitive research. If a special TV program or movie is upcoming, ask your children to find books or magazines that will enhance the progam or the book upon which the movie is based. Set up a schedule each day which will dedicate some time to learning activities. Plan a weekly trip to the library. Get their suggestions for books, and get in on some library activities. Read to your children daily. The librarian will have some excellent suggestions on good books to read aloud. Make up games to review such things as time tables, addition, . , facts, spelling skills, etc. Make sure that books are placed in TEMPTING spots around the house. You might even leave them open to an interesting page. ScoutGet involved in PTA, ing, church functions or other pertinent activities. educational Try some short-rang- e excursions such as visiting the Childrens Museum, live plays, the Human Society, historical sites, the planetarium, museums, the State Capitol, the Zoo, art exhibits, etc. The mind is capable of digesting 10 bits of information per second. Fill those seconds. Play family games which promote learning. There are many commercial games which deal with trivia, memory, thinking activities, count ing or words. In addition there are many games which the family can play. Post a word of the day on your refrigerator and let the whole family get involved in USING THE NEW WORD as much as possible. Encourage your children to write notes and letters. Leave notes all around the house for them to read. If you are going on a trip, have them write for information and help plan the trip in detail. 'Try a written treasure hunt in which children follow clues to find a prize of some sort. Tailor part of every activity to each child according to their ages and needs. Let each child participate. Involvement helps their and increases their desire to learn. Kmpnauj sscwramaj ly used for the construction of a hammerhead turn around.
