Show V 5B Five Senses Explored At Whittier THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, July 10, 1986 HUNTER. Exploring the five senses is the focus of science classes being taught during summer school sessions at Whittier elementary. Students of Valerie Birtcher are studying the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and touch. Sixteen students in first through seventh grade are involved in the class. The ear unit includes learning how sound travels, how it can be muffled or amplified and learning about the many sounds that people automatically block out every day, the teacher explained. Students come to school each Friday prepared to present an experiment to the class, she said, including their hypothesis and how it was proved or disproved. Students are also learning about illusions, the tricks played by the eyes and ears on unsuspecting people. "I am very much enjoying having the variety of age groups in the class. The older students help the younger and it has proven very enjoyable for all, she remarked. Mrs. Birtcher, who is also teaching a computer class involving the same age groups, noted that in this setting, the more adept students are able to assist those new to computers. I am amazed at how quickly the younger students pick up on the use of computers. They love it, she ' said. Two computer classes are taught, involving 15 students in each. Heidi Hansen is teaching children in kindergarten through third grade reading, writing and language skills.
