Classes range from gymnastics to cake decorating to word processing, noted coordinator Joe Richards, with many special interest classes included. Lets assume the nearly impossible, he said. After satisfying your boss from 8 to 5, keeping the house relatively tidy and the family relatively happy, youre still full of energy and want a new challenge. You can find that challenge in a community school class, he said. Both credit and courses are offered, usually attracting about 700 students each quarter, Richards said. At about $1.25 an hour, or $24 for an class, students can learn such things as sign language (the only such class offered in the valley), handwriting analysis, or flower arranging. Non-hig- h school graduates can complete work in various classes for just $1, with credit awarded, he noted. Instructors in credit classes are certified and often teach school during the day, while instructors in the classes are often drawn from the community and boast years of experience in their non-cred- it RIVERTON CITY NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Notice is hereby given that the Riverton City Council will hold a hearing on Tuesday, March 18. 1986, at a Public at 6:30 Meeting beginning P.M. in the Riverton City Office Building, 12765 South 1400 GRANGER. Career ladder programs in science, advanced placement history and Spanish are gaining recognition at Granger high. We feel our teachers are doing some really great work in these programs and they are of real value to our students, commented assistant principal Parley Jacobs. Teachers are also enthusiastic about their projects and many zero in on the use of computers as a way to assist advanced students in their efforts to achieve. Ross Madsen, advanced placement history teacher, noted that students respond very favorably to his use of computerized review tests. The students take the 25 point review tests before actually taking a test on the chapter they are studying. They tell me this is very helpful in preparing for tests. If they pass the tests, they receive college credit, so it is well worth working for, he noted. Martha Cole, who also teaches AP history, said her program is designed for the purpose of giving students additional time to study and receive personalized help in weak areas. In this smaller group, the students are more likely to discuss and bring up questions which the fast pace of the AP class does not allow, she remarked. As of now, students involved in the tutorial program have achieved higher class grades than those not involved. A second goal is to allow exceptional students to concentrate on more advanced classes without having to fill their schedules with classes they dont really need. Most of the students in this group have fulfilled the requirements for graduation and are taking several AP classes. The fact they can get optional credit for this class and do some of their studying in it is a lifesaver for these very Involved and talented she said. His purpose is to establish a foundation from which a biology program can be expanded, taking pressure off the teacher and placing essentials at his fingertips, giving him more time for creative labs and individual projects, he said. Much of the material has been placed in computers, allowing for easy alteration if a teacher wishes to adapt material for slightly different usage, he said. A slide presentation on some topics is included, and, said Clark, whether the slides are of different bird orders or a hike to Red Rine Lake, they make the subject more interesting and meaningful to the students. Using computers in teaching science is also the focus of a project by Gerald Lord, who says his threefold objectives are to prepare students for the ACT, to discover uses for computers in science teaching and to increase computer awareness by providing time and' help for students in the IBM computer lab after school. "Students may use computerized information to review materials covered on the ACT and may spend as much time as necessary to familiarize themselves with the type of questions asked and materials covered in the test, he noted. One of his objectives was to make the computer lab available to students after school, giving them the opportunity to work on any of the word processing, spreadsheet, graphing or other programs, to review science materials, to communicate with other data bases through the phone modem and to work on computer work from other classes. Jacobs remarked that Spanish classes taught by Nielson have also been frequent visitors to the lab. Advanced students have used especially adapted computer pro particular subject. Offered next quarter is a class in floral design, under the direction of Diana Kingdon. Armed with 25 years experience, she combines her night e and time teaching with Saturday classes from her home studio, Richards said. Stressing hands-o- n experience for each student, she teaches everything from how to make a corsage to day-tim- wall hangings, centerpieces, seasonal arrangements and profes- sional bows. Classes are kept small, with between 12 and 15 students, an average for community school classes. An outline is provided for each phase, such as corsage making, augmented by a demonstration and diagrams drawn on the blackboard, after which the teacher circulates the room, offering individual help when needed or stopping the class to clear up a problem if necessary. The program is geared to all ages and both men and women. Supplies can be provided for student convenience. Live, dried and silk flowers are all utilized, with instruction available in designer arrangements, funeral work and weddings. Persons who complete the wedding class are certified and ready to do an entire wedding, the teacher said. Last year an experiment was conducted to see if computers could really help students learn unfamiliar words faster. One group stayed with the teacher to memorize a list of Spanish words while the other group went to the IBM lab to study the same list on the at computer, he explained. When tested, scores showed the computer users had learned as well as those in the classroom, but, when tested again two days later, the computer students remembered more than 30 percent more words than those in the classroom group.
