Fridays game d Skyline-Cottonwoo- demonstrated has how fast momentum can switch around. After trailing the Eagles through the first half, the Colts put together a picture- - perfect drive late in the third period and early in the fourth. Moving 61 yards in 11 plays, d Cottonwood scored on a run by quarterback Sean Brophy. The kick by Tracy Burnett tied the score at But on the insuing kickoff, Skyline return that exploded for a the made the margin seven again, No more than two minutes later, Skyline struck again with a touchdown pass. Cottonwood just didnt have enough time to catch 0 SALT LAKE. Even though his squad took South by a score, Murray high football coach Dale Pehrson said he still came away from Fridays game with a healthy respect for the Cub crew, especially its defensive line. South shut down any running up the middle by the Spartans and forced Perhson to adopt a change in strategy, a change that obviously worked. 33-1- 3 We just werent getting anything he said. Their line up the middle, was just too big. So we started to pass the ball and run outside and things opened up for us. Murray quarterback John Weston hit on 59 percent of his passes, going 13X22 for 186 yards. Tim Blackham caught four passes for 93 yards and Terry Jackson seven for 70 yards. Mike Howell rushed 14 times for 122 .yards and two touchdowns then passed for another. That, as much as anything told the story. Now Murray faces what may be its toughest test yet in league action, as Tooele, fresh from its win over highly regarded Jordan, pays a call at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Friday). Pehrson feels, however, that seeing the outcome of the Tooele-Jordagame has focused the attention of his team on the task at hand. Following that, the Spartans entertain Bear River Wednesday at 4 p.m. Murray moved to a big early lead against South notching two quick first quarter, a 10 yard run by Howell and a 20 yard pass from Weston to Blackham. Brent Bailey hit on one of the two extra point tries. the Spartans total to 21. South fought back in the third period, but not with its offense. Two interceptions ran back for touchdowns accounted for the Cubs points. Murray went back to work, however. Weston finding Jackson again, this time for six points on a completion. In the final period, with about four minutes left, Howell capped Murrays scoring with a touchdown romp. While Pehrson was pleased with his teams offensive execution, he also noted that South did not score on the Spartan defense. There, Howell also played a role, working with Lance McDonald, Scott Kessler and Trent Barney at linebacker. In the secondary, Pehrson praised Brett In the second quarter, Howell, tryBringhurst, Brent Bailey, Terry ing his hand at the throwing game, McBride and Blackham. Up front, a hurled a strike to Danny special comendation was given to Devenport. Weston then threw to Mark Pino, who was subbing at nose Jackson for two points and boosted tackle. n d GHS Rally Tops Bucs a MAGNA. After suffering through largely ineffective first half, Granite finally put things together in the second and came from behind to down a still troubled Cyprus high squad Granite's first possession of the contest, set the tone for the entire half. The F armers drove down to the Pirate one only to have a series of misfortunes, penalties and miscues, stall things. Granite then decided to try for three points, but the field goal attempt was blocked. : Cyprus took over and moved straight down the field to score a touchdown and held onto that margin until the midway point. We told the kids at halftime that we had an extremely important half of football ahead, recounted Granite coach Mark Nielson, and that we needed the win badly. In the second half they responded. They went out and did what they had to 14-- 0 - do. UEA week off. On Wednesday Granite will host West in a game slated to start at 7:30 p.m. Granite opened the third quarter against Cyprus by forcing the Pirates to punt from deep in their own territory. Granite started out from its own 40 and put together an non-leag- scoring drive, the capper being an six yard run by David Clouse. Nelson Caceres point after eight-pla- kick gave the Farmers the lead Late in the same period, Granite got the ball back at its 20 and marched downfield again. The 15 play drive ended when Shane Smith ran into the end zone from 10 yards out, just as the fourth quarter was getting under way. Caceres kick was again on target. Coach Nielson couldnt say enough about his defense, particulary strong safety Tony Moulton, who made a number of saving tackles on critical third down plays. Travis Tenney, subbing at defensive end, offensive guard and as Granites deep snapper, also pleased Nielson. On offense for Granite, Shawn Christiansen rushed for 126 yards on 27 carries while Shane Smith added 63 yards on 16 tries. Clouse was 7X11 passing for 127 yards. Following Granites strategy of spreading the ball around, nobody caught more than two passes. 7-- Another equally important test now faces Granite as the Farmers must travel to Skyline tomorrow (Friday) for a 4 p.m. game. Though the Eagles at 4 on the season, their win over Cottonwood demonstrated that they cant be taken lightly and Nielson pledged that his team wont. The Pirates will be hoping Granger is taking them lightly as they are guest for the Lancer Homecoming party Friday at 4. That kickoff return and the long pass really killed us, said Colt coach Tom Jones. After struggling through the first half, seeing a couple of drives stopped on mistakes and turnovers, we thought we had things turned around. But after those two quick scores by Skyline, we fell apart, lost our concentration. Tomorrow (Friday) Cottonwood must travel to Taylorsville, another team hungry for a win. Although Jones feels his crew can win their three remaining league games, he knows they need to get at least two to have a chance at the playoffs. The game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Cottonwood will be on the road again, this time at Provo for a 7:30 p.m. nonleague game. Skyline really controlled the ball in the first period, running off 28 plays to Cottonwoods five and posting a touchdown on a drive. Cottonwoods defense settled down in the second quarter, but the offense still had its problems, fumbling on one occassion at the Eagle five. The Colts moved the football much better in the third quarter. The scoring drive that lapped over into the final stanza included runs of 10 and eight yards by Ross Callahan and a pass from Brophy to to Kyle MAGNA. Two touchdown runs, including one of 59 yards, by Troy lHallowell paced the Cyprus Juniors ,to a 3 victory over Tooele Saturday in Ute Conference play.
