He grew up on a large farm, and graduated in May of 1913 from South Jordan elementary, which at that time offered eight grades of instruction. While only a youth his father took him into the field with three horses and a plow, and taught him how to plow a straight furrow. That furrow became one of the highlights of his life. In 1953 he found others who shared his interest and he became part of a group who gathered records of the Beckstead family from all parts of the United States and Canada. Out of this material he compiled a book and one of the volumes was taken to Germany where the family originated. It was warmly received by the German branch, who proceeded to have it translated into their language. At the end of World War I, Elmer took up photography as a hobby for pleasure and to enhance his genealogy work. He had no professional lessons, he simply learned by doing . . . and much of his work was included in the Beckstead book. When he completed the Beckstead book, he gathered records of Egbert and Bybee lines, also five generations of his wifes German line. A man of strong spiritual leanings, Elmer claims to have had many symbolic dreams, visions, blessings and answers to many prayers. He noted that the sick and afflicted have been healed under his hands, and that he has seen several heavenly mainifestations during a lengthy illness when he hovered between life and death. On June 15, 1978, he and his wife Ida celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Five days later Ida died.
