Show Thursday, March THE GREEN SHEET 7 21, 1985 Board Members Indulge In School Name Game GRANITE PARK. Whats in a name?, William Shakespeare once asked. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, the bard said, but does this same logic apply to a board naming a junior high school? Mewmbers of the Granite Board of Education tackled that question Tuesday night as they pondered a lengthy list of suggested names for three new schools. Previously referred to as new elementary tary school school A, new elemenB and the new junior high school, the three schools were christened Tuesday one in honor of a founding father of our nation, another enshrining a symbol associated with the state and the third describing the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Mountain View, Sunset, Sunset Ridge, Mountain Shadow, Mountain Vale, Sunnyside, Valley View, Ridgecrest, Mountain Vale, Pleasant Dale and Horizon were also declined because other schools in the valley had names which were the same or similar. Rockfield was eliminated because it conjured up the image of a gravel pit, Lakeside was thrown out because the schools are far from the lake and the name Misty m - high. County Pursues Property Purchase TAYLORSVILLE. The County Recreation Board tended its support to a proposal that the county look into the purchase 800 acres of Oquirrh Mountain property in Yellow Fork Canyon. Western Heights, Westwind, Meadow was scratched from the list because it sounds too much like a lady I once knew, said board member Gary Swensen. We ought to honor people who make a contribution to education. When put forth in the form of a motion, however, Mrs. Farnsworth could not obtain a second and the measure died. We have a beehive of activity in an elementary school and it ties in with the state very well, J. Dale Christensen explained while speaking in support of the name Beehive for an elementary school. It falls into the category geographically and the name rings well. Freedom is everything this country is all about Gary Swensen said, as he proposed that the junior high be given the Freedom name. In support of the name Silver Hills, board president Patricia G. from Sandstrom explained that where I live (on the east side of the valley) the Oquirrh Mountains over there look like theyre made of silver. Superintendent John Reed Call cautioned the board against using first, that the county move to acquire an additional 1,500 acres of adjacent property recently declared surplus from the Camp Williams military reserve; second, that adequate water supplies be available; third, that problems with access and parking be resolved; and fourth, that the purchase of the property not impact on county recreations budget allocation. The county is looking at sites in the Oquirrhs to help relieve pressure on recreational areas located in Wasatch canyons. Last week board representatives and parks and recreation staff surveyed the Yellow Fork Canyon area and pronounced it as the only really workable site available. Division director Gary Swensen called upon Clark Ostergaard, a planner and landscape architect with the National Forest Service, to provide an assesment of the types of recreational activities the canyon could support. Ostergaard said that activities involving the least amount of development, such as nature paths, cross country skiing and equestrian trails, would be best. Space for such things as picnicing, camping, snowmobil-ing- , jogging and cycling would be limited. A golf course would require a lot of site modification and Ostergaard strongly advised against use by d vehicles. Access and parking were two big concerns expressed by Ostergaard. The canyon currently has only a single lane road and parking areas would have to be created.
